That night after having played and won yet some more COD, I found myself lying in that same familiar room at the back of the Jones’ house where I slept every time I stayed over. It had become like a second home to me, I was there that often these days. I had even got a spare set of clothes there and the bed was always made permanently expecting my arrival. Having finally gotten a shower to get what was left of the flour off my body, I found myself lying in bed reflecting on the day as I usually did after a long day. My mind was filled with all kinds of thought from Lily to the ending of a Batman movie I had seen a few days before hand. Through my disarray of thoughts, two things stood out as bothering me which could in turn be related. The first thought in my mind was that of the night before and the sad eyes of Lily. I had worried so much about her all day that when I finally knew she was ok, I still couldn’t help but think about her. The second thought I had which was related to the first was that of the wellbeing of Mrs Jones. Neither of the Jones kids had mentioned their mother all day; they often didn’t when she was ill or in hospital so that was to be expected, but it was clear that something was up and her presence was sorely missed. James certainly wasn’t himself in the pool earlier that day, that added to Lily’s troublesome tears made me think of Mrs Jones all the more as I silently prayed she would get well soon, making a mental note to find out how she was tomorrow. While James and were the closest friends, there was some things he would rather bottle up and keep to himself; his moms illness was one of them although I knew I could get him to spill the beans one way or another. My problems always seemed so unimportant when I weighted them up against the problems which the Jones’ faced, suddenly my math homework or dinner choice just didn’t matter when compared with that. They were strong kids that was for sure.
At one point I must have drifted off into a light sleep, because the next thing I knew I was being awoken by that same light knocking which had woken me up many nights before when I had stayed there. Glancing at my phone the time shone back at me brightly through the darkness of the night as I struggled to make out the time through my squinting eyes but concluded it was still far too early to be awake, maybe 4 am or so, I was unsure. Hauling my body up from the bed while slipping on some clothes, I stumbled towards the door in my sleep deprived state, unaware at first of the area around me but soon become familiar and alert to the situation. Placing my hand on the cold metal handle of the wooden door I turned it to find nothing but an empty hallway. I reasoned with myself that I must have imagined the knocking on the door before I saw the figure in the distance make its way down the narrow steps towards the basement. I slowly began to follow along after it being sure not to make any noise as I quietly whispered:
