Chapter 1: The Beginning of Summer
Nina P.O.V
A week and a half ago, I graduated from high school. Yeah, I make it sound like it's not a big deal but I got through senior year without all those teenage troubles my parents read in one of those 'keeping an eye on your teenage kid' books that my Dad claims to be a special manual to all those in parenthood. It sounds crazy but that's as normal as it'll ever get in our household. I also got the grades that I hoped for that gets me a ticket into Stanford University, my first choice collage. I also applied in a few other collages but I'm not so sure being accepted there. Columbia University also sent me an application and a letter stating my teacher, Mrs. Harrison, recommended me to Columbia's board. I know, the collage applications are overwhelming. Now I know how my sister felt when she was at this stage; complaining. At the moment she's traveling the world, working for one of the world's top chief in a famous cruise ship. She's been sending pictures of her adventures when the ship docks at their destination. Of course, if your a top chief's right hand girl in the kitchen you'll get your day to take on the world while the ship docks. She's sent me numerous of post cards, from L.A, Rio, Spain, Paris, Milan, Hokkaido, Bangkok, Hong Kong, Sri Langka, Melbourne, Sydney. Looking at the postcards pinned on my wall, I realized that there's still a whole world out there that I have only seen a dot of. And that dot is right here is Michigan. Luckily another dot will be added to the places I've been to. But this dot is not just like any other dot. This dot is a HUGE dot right at the Eastern coast. A place I like to call Miami, Florida.
See at my graduation a whole mob of my family came. From my grandparents on my mom and dad's side, my Dad's siblings with their partners and their children and their children's children, my Mom's sister (without the ex-husband of course) and her daughter and her two brothers with wives and their children. Imagine how many aunts, uncles and cousins, nieces and nephews that is.
Anyways, back to the point. My Mom's sister, Karen was telling my mom of her newly purchased house at a small but exclusive town right off the coast in Miami. I know it sounds all rich and everything but Mom said it was affordable if you had savings and didn't have a big family. I can't really calculate how much affordable was according to my mom but it still sounded like it was for rich people. I mean, the beach area was private, meaning only the people who lives there uses it. It has a pier too, which holds events. Aunt Karen said I'd love their cotton candy and shakes. Well that's where it started. After stating how the cotton candy and shakes will satisfy my sweet tooth, Aunt Karen got the idea of me staying with them for the summer before collage starts and get to spend quality time with her daughter, Lily, who is the same age as me.
Lily is the closest to me in all my cousins. I had other cousins the same age as me and were girls but Lily and I just have this bond that whenever there was a family gathering we'd always find ourselves together without looking for each other. We click but we don't exactly know each other like it sounds like we do. It's not every month there will be family gatherings.
My Mom thought it was a great idea. She said, and I quote, 'a good way to test my new level of freedom and responsibility, to be away from me for two months.' And that's how I ended up packing a luggage with everything I need for two months; my whole room. I packed most of my summer clothes and a loose sweater and an oversized jumper with a hood incase it got cold during the night.
