I was running. All I could see was smoke clouding the crimson red sky as I ran down a rough concrete road and miraculously was not losing my breath. What I was running from, I had no idea but I felt an ominous presence that oddly felt far away yet extremely close. I kept on running long enough for me to look around to see where I was. It looked like a deserted highway. The whole landscape had a deserted atmosphere to it, like it was the end of the world. Once again I wondered what I was running from and still had no clue.
Until I turned around.
All I could see was a dark and monstrous shadow that popped out in front of me like a 3D movie that was freakishly real. I felt as if I had been thrown back ward by it's very presence. I could see the shadow nearing towards me. Then, despite it's large size it did nothing but whisper close a sentence that seemed hushed but still echoed through my ears....
"finis enim prope est..." It whispered before the creature lunged forward and I fell into a black abyss...
I woke up in haste as I sat up in my bed. I looked around groggily with my eyes still only half open. Just a dream, I thought. I felt uncomfortable, confused and a bit, well... confused. After asking myself why I was feeling like this I tried to remember what exactly happened in this awfully weird dream of mine. All at once, every moment of the dream came flooding back in a wave of terror. The blood red sky, running on the highway and that creature. 'Finis enim prope est'.. what the hell did that mean? I sighed as I detached myself from my bed immediately feeling cold without my blankets on top of me. I felt even colder when I realized I had nothing on but a tank top and thin pajama bottoms. Damn central heating...
I made my way to the bathroom by wading through the piles of papers on my bedroom floor and the empty plates of last night's dinner. I really need to sort my room out I noted to myself as I looked over my orange painted room. When I looked over my many drawings and paintings that were stuck on the walls I could even see the paint flaking off in the corners of them. Nothing unusual. I opened the bathroom door and locked it behind me then went to the mirror to assess myself. My green eyes winced at my reflection. My mousy brown hair covered the sides of my tired face in little waves, straight to my shoulders. I washed my face thoroughly in an effort to wash away the sick and nauseous feeling in my stomach after last night's dream.
After proceeding with my usual morning ritual, I headed downstairs to the kitchen. I decided to make this morning as lazy as possible. After all, it was a Saturday and while people spent their Saturdays doing fun, normal things, I was slouched on the sofa scrolling through Tumblr blogs. Ah, the joys of teenage life. I made breakfast with the little food that was in the fridge. Once I finished eating I realized that I was on my own, and that there was a post it note on the table. Gone to work, be bak in a few hrs. see u l8tr xxx. Judging from the few spelling errors, terrible handwriting and the fact that only two of us lived in the apartment I knew that it was my older brother Austin. He was 19 so only two years older than me and worked in a second hand thrift store. We weren't rich but hey, we got by.
I still couldn't get the nightmare out of my head. I felt like it had a deeper meaning or something. I was lying on the sofa when my phone rang. I grabbed it off the coffee table and didn't bother to look at the caller ID. "Depressed teenager speaking." I said in monotone. "Well, you seem cheerful today." A sarcastic voice replied and I knew who it was. "What is it, Maya?" I honestly didn't want to talk to anyone right now. Not entirely because of the dream but more because I just didn't feel like it.
"What? Don't you think I just called to check in on my dearest, most beloved friend on the planet?" "Maya, I think we both know that's not true. The last time you said that I ended up bailing you out of because you got charged for drink driving and harassment." I stated. From what I remember, that was not a fun night.
"Aw come on, let it go. It was just a harmless fight!" "You tore a girl's hair off!" "That bitch got what she deserved. Anyways, you were right. I need you to come to a party with me tonight at eight." If there was anything I learned from teenager movies, it was that shit always happens at parties, which is why I vowed to never go to them, unlike Maya my best friend who lived for parties, clubbing and all that crap. Me on the other hand would much rather stay at home with a Ben and Jerry's in my lap and a PlayStation controller in my hand . All in all, I hated every social event there was.
"No. Nope. I refuse. I definitely refuse." I said immediately. "Why?! come on, just this once! I've never gone to a party with you and you're my best friend. I want have some real fun with you, not just playing Call Of Duty after school. Please come. For me?" I obviously coudn't say no and she was right. When we hung out together we didn't do much at all apart from play video games and talk about people who piss us off. But it was then, after I said just a few lines, that my life was going to be altered quite a bit.
"I'll see you at eight then?" "Yay! I love you so much, Evelyn Winchester. Now go find something pretty and wear it at eight." "But-" "Kay love you bye!" She hung up. I sighed inwardly and went off into my bedroom to look for something to wear.
