jasmine

i woke up today with a smile on my face, it's what my counselor tells me to do.

"jas, when you wake up in the morning, look in the mirror and smile. tell yourself that you're beautiful and that you will conquer the world one day." her voice rang in my head.

"jas, get up! it's our first day. we're going to be late." my brother said as he knocked on my door.

i'm going to be starting sophomore year at Westview High.

my brother's name is jonathan, he's starting senior year.

jona has always had the "i don't care" attitude since aunt becky died, but when it comes to me, he would protect me at all costs.

jona and i lost my aunt due to cancer 5 years ago.

i never knew my mother that well, she used to beat us; her and her boyfriend.

we lived with my aunt, whom took us in at young ages and raised us.

since she died, we were in and out of foster homes. no one wanted jona because he's not the best behaved.

they tried splitting us up, but he wasn't allowing it and neither was i.

jona turned 18 a few weeks ago, which meant he now has full custody over me.

we live in a two bedroom apartment, just down the street from the school, but enough about us.

i didn't have enough time to shower- which i did last night- so, got dressed and met him in the kitchen.

he handed me a granola bar. "ready?"

"yeah."

it was the middle of the semester and i really didn't want to start a new school, but it was the best for me and jona.

a brand new start.

jona and i walked into the school and everyone immediately stared.

"what is everyone looking at? get on with your classes!" a man in a suit, whom i assumed was the principal, motioned for everyone to get to class.

"are you guys Jonathan and Jasmine Black?" he asked.

"yes, sir." jona answered.

"i'm mr. Thomas; follow me, let's get you two your schedules." he smiled and showed us to his office.

we  walked in his huge office and took our seats in front of his desk.

he looked through his brown filling cabinet and pulled out two folders.

"so, jonathan, it seems that you've had a troubled past?" he crossed his hands on the desk.

jona looked at me, then back at mr. Thomas, "uh, yes sir."

"but you don't seem like a bad kid. tell me, jona; what's your academic status like?" he continued.

"uh, i play football, lacrosse, and i was on A/B honor roll back home."

mr. Thomas nodded his head as he studied the paper.

"and you, jasmine, you're a straight A student."

"yes, sir."

"and you're a soccer player? you guys will fit in just fine here." he smiled. "here's your schedules, class starts in 10."

he handed us the papers and dismissed us from his office.

"he put me in honors Geometry?" jona said, shocked.

"me too." i said.

"you're going to have to tutor me." he said, laughing. "what's your first class?"

"i have science." i replied.

"i have english, i'll drop you off."

he dropped me off in front of my class. "do good."

"okay, see you at lunch."

he held up a peace sign and walked away in the empty halls.

i took a deep breath and walked into the classroom.

"hello, please, take a seat." the teacher said.

she looked like she was in her early 30's and she wore a pant suit.

i took my seat in the back by the wall, trying to avoid eye contact with everyone as they stared.

"my name is mrs. lynn. you're jasmine? she smiled.

"yes, ma'am." i said, shyly.

"i'm not going to make you introduce yourself, because i know how scary it is when you're new. instead, you can write 10 facts about yourself on a piece of paper and turn it in to me at the end of class. it can be as personal as you want, and i'm going to be here if you ever need to talk."she smiled.

"thank you." i said.

"now class, back to work." she began to teach the lesson.

i felt someone looking at me, as if they were burning holes in the side of my face.

i turned to my right and looked up, to find a boy staring into my soul from across the room.

he was quite attractive, i must say.

he had fluffy, brown hair that was groomed perfectly.

i gave an awkward smile, but instead of smiling, he just looked away.

the bell rang.

i started to pack my things.

i looked to see if anyone else was here.

he was standing in the doorway, looking back at me, but walked away when he noticed i was looking at him.

"i'm ready to go home." i thought to myself.

i packed my things and headed to my next class.
