I grabbed my chemistry book and slammed my locker shut. It was too early in the morning to be going to science class, or to be doing anything, really, other than sleeping.
The one thing I enjoyed about science class was my lab partner and best friend Ethan. I was new to the school this year, and it sucked because it was senior year. I'd lived in Illinois my whole life, but we had to go and move halfway across the country to New Jersey. I was not looking forward to school, but I met Ethan and we instantly became friends. He always made me smile, and he made me look forward to coming to school in the morning.
I walked into my science class and sat down next to Ethan at our lab table. "Hi Ethan," I said tiredly while setting my stuff down.
"Hi Hannah." He bit his lip, thinking I didn't notice. But I always noticed when he bit his lip. And I always noticed whenever he stared at me. Ever since the day we met, I knew that he liked me. The worst part was that I didn't like him back. I was afraid of breaking his heart.
I read the date on the board. It said Friday, December 15th, 2017, and I suddenly remembered the significance of tomorrow. "Oh, and happy early birthday! And tell Grayson that I said happy birthday to him too!" Ethan had told me a lot about Grayson but somehow I'd never actually met him.
"Thanks! Actually, I was wondering if-" Ethan got cut off by the bell. The morning announcements came on and we pretended to listen.
Our teacher, Mrs. Brooks, took attendance and then started class. "Along with your final next week, you will be completing a project with your lab partner." Ethan and I looked at each other with blank expressions. We both hated science projects.
Mrs Brooks continued to ramble on about our project for another five minutes, then we got to work. It wasn't going to be that hard, it was just going to be very time consuming. In forty minutes we got about a fourth of the way done, so we still had roughly two hours of work left.
We had a little less than five minutes left of class. "I was gonna ask you earlier if you wanted to come to dinner tomorrow with my family for our birthday," Ethan said nervously. "Maybe you could come over a few hours early so we can hang out and finish our project."
"Yeah, of course I'll go to dinner! What time should I come over?"
"Um, four is good. Dinner is at 6:30. And we're going to Red Lantern." Red Lantern was a very fancy Japanese restaurant, and it just happened to be my favorite place in town.
The bell rang. "Perfect. See you tomorrow." I grabbed my stuff and walked out the door.
*ethan's pov*
I watched Hannah turn around and walk out of the classroom, her long blonde hair swaying back and forth with each step.
As I was walking down the hall to my second hour, all I could think about was Hannah. I couldn't believe she was actually going to dinner with me and my family. It may not really be a date, but I was still excited.
From the moment I saw her, I had a crush on her. And I was falling in love with her. She was so beautiful. The first thing I noticed about her was her green eyes that sparkled in the light.
Hannah knew nearly everything about me. One thing she didn't know was that I was depressed for months and that I almost killed myself the night before I met her. Something inside of me told me that I should stay alive for just one more day. When I met her the next day, I knew that she was the reason for me to live. She made me truly happy, something I hadn't felt in a long time. I could live if she didn't love me, as long as she was still my best friend.
But I couldn't live if she was in love with Grayson.
