And so he waited...
Looking right and left, as if he would run up and kneel to hug him. Looking up and down, as if his body would jump down from the skies or dig itself up from the ground.
Rocky's nails digging into the mud occasionally, seeking for any kind of distraction but finding none. Pale brown eyes looking around again, searching for that familiar smiling face of his, but none he recognized... They were all strangers, some gave him left overs, others gave a pet on the head, even a moment or two of attention, but they all gave looks of pity. He couldn't understand why though, his brother would come back for him, he promised he would always come back for him, he promised they would move out to a better house and more space, even a backyard so that they could play together. His brother had promised! But she was so mean...
His mom got mad at him often, he knew he wasn't the best son, but he tried his best. He was always bringing the mail for her but she always screamed at him when he was just trying to help. Sometimes he missed when he went to the bathroom and she forced his brother to clean it, but then he would get mad at him, and scream too, just like her... But he tried so hard. Always smiling at them when they got home, even if his mom just pushed him aside and call him names. He smiled. Even when his brother didn't really look at him like before.
But why had she left him here? When she had said that they were going out to a park, he started to jump from joy!
It was so cold here... And these people... Every time he tried going into those places they called houses, they would throw rocks at him, shoing him away. He was almost hit by those big metal things!
But he didn't know why... He just wanted something to eat so that he could make it back to that giant concrete building where his family lived. Right now though, as he sat resting down from days of walking, he couldn't help but let a whimper escape...
He looked around trying to find his brother's weird face, but couldn't see it anywhere in the mass of humans passing by. Again with those looks of pity. The kind of look that made him want to cry, and so he did. Small sobs leaving him in the form of pained howls, dull brown eyes closing tightly, trying not to see around him.
He had given up!
Why!?
He didn't mean to chew on those shoes, or pee on the carpet, or even to eat some of their food! It was his instinct!
'I-I'm sorry!' He would wail, but to no avail, people just kept screaming for him to shut up. They were throwing things now, then something hard and big came to a stop on his chocolate colored face with force, a whine leaving his thirsty throat.
A tall man was still holding a few rocks ready to vent more his way, so with a slight limp he fled from there. He heard honks from the metal thingies, but he ignored them.
He just wanted home, his brother and mother, even if she was mean to him.
"Rocky!?" W-What? "Rocky!!"
'Is that m-me...? It's b-been so long s-since I've heard that name!'
Four hairy legs stopped, turning around he saw the human stepping out of metal thing. It was him! It was his brother!
Tail wagging; he began to approach the human who was also doing the same, but the happy face he was carrying when he stepped out of the thing was now replaced by something else. Fear? But why? Was he not happy? Did he not really miss him?
But then it hit him... Sending his already weak body flying across the pavement.
Brown dirtied coat, now mixed with blood as it ran from his side and down long broken legs. He tried to stand up but he could not feel his legs. Looking down he saw a few of his ribs poking out of his flat stomach.
The young adult was now by his side, craddling his lost friend close to his chest. Tears pouring down his cheeks as he remembered how just a few years ago his mother had taken his pet away and he hadn't bothered to fight her for him... Why?
"I-I'm so sorry boy...This is all my fault..." The mixed dog heard him say between sobs, but it was hurting him more to see him crying. So by now he was accompanying his brother with his own as he also tried to tell him how he felt.
"D-Don't cry..." He barked out weakly, "I've b-been looking for you... I'm s-so glad you're here..." He wasn't sure if the other was hearing him, so he tried to sit up but he couldn't no matter how much he tried... So he kissed his hand, whining softly, "I m-missed you... B-But n-now I k-know you're okay... I can rest..."
His vision became too blurry, succeeding in making him dizzy. Closing them he let out a sigh... Making it his last... Barely catching his brother's final whisper to him...
"I-I'll miss you too..."
