I was on edge sitting in the home Ec room the following morning. I was frightened about going through with the plan. Liz, Ashleigh, Marley and I had an emergency VLC meeting the night before "Operation Get Addy out of the House on Saturday." Because of my parents' rules about staying overnight on a Saturday, we had to get creative. The plan was that on Saturday afternoon I would tell my parents that Marley and I had a huge assignment due Monday and we needed more time to work on it. They would drop me off at her house early in the evening. Marley's mom would think I was only staying for a few hours and Gavin would pick me up there. We couldn't risk my parents seeing him and it would be easier to lie if Marley's mom accidentally found out. I planned to have Gavin send me a text when he was on his way so that I could wait outside to meet him. After the party Gavin would drop me off at home (my parents thinking that it was Marley's mom). They didn't know what his car looked like.
Gavin walked up to my desk and turned my notebook towards him "Pumpkin pie, yams with marshmallows, orange jello salad... is this what we are making for our Thanksgiving meal?"
"Well, it was an idea. My family always has these things and I know how to make them so I thought it would be easy."
"All of these things are orange."
"Oh, you're right. I guess it was a stupid idea. What do you want to make?" The assignment was to create three side dishes for the Thanksgiving extravaganza. Mrs. Anderson was providing the turkey.
"I think these will be great!" He paused. "So... you were supposed to let me know about your schedule for this weekend."
"Oh, yeah, I forgot." Liar, "I guess I can go, but I don't have a ride."
"No worries. I can pick you up. Where do you live?"
"Well, actually, I am going to be at my friend Marley's house working on an English assignment," more lies. "You can pick me up there."
"Okay. Text me her address later and I will use my GPS to find her house."
"Should I bring anything?"
"Nope. Maybe a coat in case it gets cold. But I can help in that department." He smiled at me. "We will have a fire." How was I supposed to say no to this guy? My parents taught me about temptation, but I never thought it would come in the form of tall, dark and handsome. I guess they never thought I would grow up enough to be interested in boys. Michael was just my best friend as far as they knew. There had never been cause for concern.
"Liz, you have great taste. What should I wear tomorrow night? How can I stay warm, but still look cute?"
The girls circled around me fourth period on Friday.
"I can't believe you are going to have your first kiss tomorrow night!!! It isn't fair. I never meet guys. I don't think I will ever lose my membership in the VLC." Marley sighed.
"Who said anything about kissing?" Secretly I hoped, but I wasn't about to admit it only to disappoint them in the end.
"Don't worry about your clothing. Just wear something comfortable, jeans and a t-shirt, flip-flops. It doesn't matter when you are at the beach." Liz responded.
"The real question is what are you going to do when he tries to kiss you? Don't slap him."
"That joke is getting old Ashleigh. I would probably faint if he tried to kiss me, fall in the fire, and end up in the hospital. That would be just my luck."
"Just go and have fun. Stop thinking about kissing him and maybe you won't be so tongue-tied. You have to actually talk to the guy or he is going to lose interest."
