Ring...
Ring...
Ring..."Hello?"
"Hey Mom."
"Oh, hi Gray! What has you calling me this early in the morning, baby?"
"You know that kid I told you about?"
"The one you said was real nasty cut up? How's he doing, by the way?"
"Yeah that's the one. He's good. I'm going hunting today and I was wondering if you could watch him for me."
"Sure! But why does he need to be watched? You ain't holding him hostage are you?" Laughter could be heard through the line.
"No, mama. It's really hard to explain. Could you just come over to meet him, while I'm here? I think if you meet him you'll understand. Plus, it'll give him time to get to know you and it'll be easier to leave him here without a fight."
"Sure baby. You want me to come over now? I've been up since six and I'm just watching some television. It's no trouble,"
"That'd be great. So I'll see you in a little bit?"
"Yep. Bye baby."
"Bye Mama. I love you,"
"Love you too baby. Bye."Click.
Gray hung up the phone and went into Kaden's room to wake him up. "Kaden?" He called softly, rubbing his back. Kaden hummed but didn't open his eyes. "Wake up, sweetheart. Someone's coming over and I want you to meet her," Kaden opened his eyes and yawned. "Tasey?" He asked, raising up and crawling into his Daddy's lap sleepily. (Note: he pronounces 'c' and 'k' sounds as 't') "no baby, it's Grandma," Gray stood up and carried him into the living room. "Gamma?"
"Yeah, baby. It's your Grandma. She's coming to see you,"
"See me!" Kaden echoed excitedly. Gray laughed.
"Yeah, she's coming to see you! But first we gotta get your little stinky butt changed, don't we pumpkin?" Gray said, laying the boy down on the couch and unbuttoning his onesie. He made quick work of getting the messy diaper off of him and thrown in the trash then cleaned him up with wipes before strapping on another diaper and refastening his onesie. As soon as he finished, there was a knock on the door. "That sounds like Grandma. You wanna help me answer the door?" Gray asked, picking the boy up. "Yeah!" He said, clapping his hands.
Gray opened the door to let his mom in and she smiled. "Hey Gray! Is this little one Kaden?" She asked, pinching his leg lightly. "Yeah, it is. Say hi pumpkin," Gray instructed, but Kaden just blushed and hid his face. "Aww, the poor thing is shy. That's okay baby, you take your time!" She said, walking in and hanging her jacket on the coat rack by the door. "It sure is cold out there. I damn near froze to death on the way here," She breathed into her hands and rubbed them together, then sat down on the couch. "Your heating system still not working, mama?" Gray asked her.
"Baby that thing hasn't worked since just about 1999."
"I'll fix it for you, just let me find some time to do it,"
"And you've been promising to work on it for me for just as long!"
"Oh mama no I haven't. I wasn't even around until '95." Gray said, setting down Kaden in front of the TV and turning on Mickey Mouse Clubhouse. "You want some coffee?"
"Sure. You know how I like it, right?"
"Yes ma'am. Two sugars, a splash of milk and hazelnut creamer."
"That's it." Gray brought back two glasses and set one down in front of his mom. "Thank you," she said, taking a sip. "No problem," Gray smiled at her. Kaden toddled over to them and looked at his daddy expectantly. "What do you need, hun?" He asked, lifting him by his underarms and setting him in his lap. "Toffee!" He said, making grabby hands at Gray's cup. "Here," Gray brought the cup to Kaden's lips before his mother slapped him on the arm. "Ow, what mama?" Gray rubbed his arm. "Don't give that baby coffee! He'll be bouncing off the walls like God knows what!" She shook her head.
Gray bounced the little boy and turned to talk to his mom. "So, have you noticed anything... Strange?" He asked, trying to step lightly. "What do you mean?" She asked. Gray covered the boys ears and whispered. "About Kaden?" She took a sip of her coffee. "How could I not? He's different. So what?" She leaned back in her seat. "I'm glad you didn't freak out, I know it's weird." He said, uncovering Kaden's ears. "Weird? Baby, your brother is Autistic."
"What? Mama, he's not autistic! I mean there's nothing wrong with that, but he isn't. He's a little."
"A little what?"
"He's a little period. He... Wait a second." He stood up and carried Kaden to his own room and turned on the TV. Then he came back.
"He what?" She asked expectantly.
"He was abused really, really badly. I mean when I found him he was barely clothed, bruises and cuts everywhere, passed out against a tree. I don't know exactly what happened to him, but it caused a rift in his memory, to where he can only remember things up to when he was maybe two or three. He's stuck at that mental age now,"
"Oh my god, that poor baby. No hun, I would never judge your little family you got here. It's obvious he needed help and that's what you did."
"Thank you, mama. I don't know what I'm doing, but I'm trying my best. He even started calling me Daddy," he said, smiling.
"Aww, that's good. So, when I'm watching him, what are some things I should do?" She asked. "Check his diaper, give him a pacifier when he gets fussy, feed him some wheat cereal around lunch time, make sure he has a nap at 1:30, or he gets really cranky. Remember, he's just like a real baby aside from his size, so anything you would do with a normal grandchild you should do with him," Gray explained and she nodded. "Do you have anything for him to play with? Does he have a crib?" She asked. He shook his head. "No, I haven't gotten around to that yet."
"Richard Gray Johnson. You mean to tell me you have a baby and nothing for him?" She asked sternly. Although Gray was an alpha, no one in the world could make him cower like his mother. "No, ma'am..." He said sheepishly. "You aren't going hunting." She said in a 'and that's final' type of tone.
"But Ma—"
"Richard."
"Mama I'm an adult!"
"And that is a baby. Hunting can wait a day or two. Now I know you wolves need to hunt every once in a while but as I recall you did so three days ago, so two days won't kill you."
"I don't even know where to start, though!"
"Then I'll come."
"But—"
"Butts are for sitting. I'm coming Richard."
"Okay, okay. But can you at least stop calling me that?"
"What do you mean, Gray?"
"Oh, I see. So I'm only Richard when I'm in trouble?"
"Baby I've been your mother for nearly 19 years. You've always been Richard when you're in trouble."They conversed for awhile longer before Kaden began crying. "That's my cue," Gray said, getting up to go get him. He carried him back in and set him at the coffee table then went into the kitchen to get something for him to eat. He came back with banana and strawberry slices on a small plate and a water bottle with milk in it. Kaden began to feed himself, but not too successfully until Gray's mom stepped in to help. "I don't know why up you didn't ask for my help sooner. You have absolutely no idea what you're doing," she said, feeding the boy fruit slices one piece at a time. "Then why don't you adopt him?" He asked, a bit spitefully.
"I'm 60 years old, I don't have the energy for a baby. I'd rather watch," she said, giving Kaden a sip of the milk. "Besides, it's not like a little help and advice would kill you. Every parent needs a little help at first. You think I was the perfect mother when I adopted you?
"I imagine it's hard for any parent, but picture this: a 41 year old woman who'd never been near a child in her life taking on the responsibility of taking care of not one, but two toddlers, all on her own. The only thing that saved me from my mistakes was your grandmother, and even then she offered no help on how to raise a child with a disability! She was always telling me I needed to discipline him more, or he was watching too much TV, or I wasn't cuddling him enough— Point is, baby, every parent on Earth needs help their first time around. So just let me help you and stop shutting your old mama out. Just let me help you, baby," she said, rubbing his arm. He nodded. "I know Mom, I'm sorry. I just feel like— like I'm not doing anything right. Being a parent is terrifying. No less when your infant is fourteen. I just wish I had all the answers," Gray looked at his baby boy, who was bouncing every time his Grandma fed him another piece of fruit. But I'll never regret you for a second. He thought to himself, sighing.* * *
"Do you have the list?" Janette said, pushing a buggy through the sliding doors of ForeverKidz, the local abdl supermarket. "Yeah. We got bottles, bibs, more onesies, baby powder, more diapers, toys—what kind of toys? Very obscure— baby food, sippy cups, more pacifiers, annnnndddd.... A crib plus accessories. What accessories?" Gray asked. "A mattress, pillows, a mobile. You act like you've never been near a baby before." Janette said, rolling her eyes, before stopping at the first isle to grab bunch of random bottle, sippy cups and pacifiers and throwing them into the buggy.
"Do we really need that many, Mama?" Gray asked, counting up ten Bottles, eight sippy cups and ten pacifiers. "If he's anything like you and your brother, you'll need more before the month is up. Trust me."
They made it through the store grabbing everything they needed plus some. Now it was Kaden's turn to do the shopping and pick out some toys. "Wan dis, dadda!" He said, making grabby hands at a teddy bear adorned in a blue shirt with the words "Baby's first teddy" on the front. Gray dropped it in the buggy. Next, he chose a big set of baby keys, which he immediately put in his mouth and started chewing. He also picked up a stuffed octopus, a toy plane, a big rattle, a bag of bath toys, and a light brown lavender scented "Princess Bear", adorned in a purple leotard and tutu with a little crown attached to it's head. Janette also grabbed a few cars, a race track, and a couple of random dress up costumes. "Now all we need is a crib and a high chair, but I don't know where we'd find those..." Janette said, before walking over to someone who worked there.
"Hi, can you help me?" She asked, getting the worker's attention. "Sure, what do you need?" She said, an overly cheerful smile plastered on her face. "My son and I are here with my grandbaby, and I was wondering if you carried cribs and highchairs here, and if so where do you keep them?"
"I'm sorry, ma'am, this isn't a regular supermarket. This is an ABDL specialty store, you'll find Baby's R Us on—"
"I'm aware this is an ABDL supermarket. My grandbaby is a little,"
"Oh! Then you'll find the cribs and highchairs all the way at the back. Do you need me to show you?"
"No ma'am, I've got it. Thank you!" Janette said, going over to the buggy and leading them to the back.
Once they finally finished they got everything into the car, including a new car seat that Janette insisted on them getting. Gray strapped in Kaden into his new car seat and then got in the front to buckle in and Janette did the same. "Thanks for helping me, Mama. I don't know if I would've ever gotten around to it if you hadn't." He said, starting up the car. "I know. I'm glad I helped, too." She laughed. "But times like this, I'm glad I inherited that money from my father. Babies are expensive," He backed out, beginning to drive home. "Don't I know it," Janette said, shaking her head humorously.Sorry I didn't include a lot of baby-Daddy interaction in this chapter. I wanted to introduce Janette and give background to where Gray came from a little bit, and why he doesn't have a job. Toodaloo, until next time. -Oliver
