EVELINA

The room fell silent and the air instantly filled with tension. As soon as I saw the man it clicked; this was Lorenzo's dad, no doubt about it. He was menacing, despite being anything but sober and he was definitely taller than Lorenzo who already reached at least six feet. His chest and arms were so buff it looked like they were about to burst out of his T-shirt, but what chilled me most of all was how much Lorenzo resembled him.

And how his eyes were locked on mine as he slowly approached the table.

"Who's this?" he slurred, looking neither angry or happy— his expression was unreadable.

"This is Evelina, Lorenzo's girlfriend." Allegra said calmly, piercing into his eyes. If looks could kill, he'd be dead. But he was still looking at me.

"You ain't special, you know."

He smirks.

What?

"You just another one of his hoes." he nods towards Lorenzo.

"Vito, stop." Allegra warned.

What was he saying?

He chuckles and punches Lorenzo's shoulder hard enough for me to feel it. "You hitting that?"

Things were still registering in my mind when Lorenzo abruptly stood up and stared at him so intensely you couldn't cut the tension with a knife.

"The fuck you saying?" He spat.

I didn't know what to do. I knew Lorenzo well enough to know he didn't either.

Vito laughed in his face, "Don't put on a show for her, son. Let her know you just gonna toss her once you-"

Lorenzo forcefully shoved him back making him lose his balance for a split second, but he quickly bounces back and swung at Lorenzo so fast none of us saw it coming.

It escalated so fast my head was spinning. Chaos.

"Eleonora go upstairs!" Allegra yelled.

What do I do?

"Don't act like it ain't true!"

I stared at my empty plate and the cake crumbs that still remained.

"Shut up!"

I sat there frozen.

"You ain't that different from me and you know it."

The fight drained from his face and it destroyed me. How could the toughest boy I knew crumble from just a few words? He gave me the world, yet I just sat there watching him fall apart. How much longer until he was simply fragments of the once lively and reckless person who held my heart?

"I ain't nothing like you!"

Laughter.

"You think you capable of loving a girl? You think you can be loyal?"

My heart was beating out of my chest.

"The second you see her walk down the aisle in a dress and say your vows, you gonna regret your whole fucking life."

Allegra's sobbing but she's frozen too.

"How you gonna act like you know exactly who I am when you ain't even here most the time?"

His voice was shaky.

"And when the priest tells you to kiss her you gone wish it was someone else."

That's enough.

I got up, walked past Lorenzo and stood right in front of him. He was maybe the shittiest person I've ever met, but when it came down to it he was just a drunken loser who was only intimidating because I was telling myself he was—I was done being helpless.

"I was starting to think you was deaf." he slurred.

I stared at him blankly, "You're a piece of shit."

It came out before I even said it to myself in my head. But surprise, I could be blunt if I wanted to.

Lorenzo rushed beside me and and grabbed my hand. "Evelina, plea-"

"You got fire in you," he chuckled, "give me more."

Without thinking twice, the words started spewing from my mouth.

"You're a disgusting excuse for a dad and human and you drink all day cause you can't grow a fucking pair and raise a family for two seconds, and then you show up and pretend you know everything about your son but the truth is that you don't know shit and that everyone would be better off if you just left because you contribute absolutely nothing to this family and I know all this because I love Lorenzo and he loves me. Oh wait, do you even know what love means?"

I got so carried away that when I finally managed to regain my senses, I realized Allegra had stopped crying and Eleonora was staring at me in shock from the bottom stair.

Now Vito was frozen and I expected to see Lorenzo with the same expression painted on his face but when I looked into his eyes; I saw love. And just like that everything was suddenly alright.

"You're amazing." he mumbled.

Vito unfroze and this time I could read his expression—defeat. He stormed away, slamming the door as he left. Then I realized how rapidly my heart was beating.

"Evelina!" Allegra cried in shock.

I turned around and she was smiling. Were those...tears?

She ran up to me and embraced me in a tight hug that Eleonora soon joined, along with Lorenzo. We stayed like that until the hurricane of emotions calmed and was merely wind.

"She's a keeper, figlio."

The rest of the night wasn't ruined, we continued talking and finished the cheesecake; every bit of worry or tension had vanished, because in that moment we were a family, and I had earned my place there.
