It was dark and gloomy, twenty years ago in a secret underground lab – Miami’s government’s best-kept secret. No one, apart from the scientists who worked there and the agents protecting it knew the location or even the fact that it existed at all. These scientists had no lives outside of the lab; it was their home, their world. And, according to the state data, they also did no longer exist.
Dr Nora Bates snapped her fingers. They were beautifully manicured, flawless just like the rest of her. Her eye line swept the room, making all those beneath her gaze falter. A single lab attendant jumped forward immediately, eager to please, but just one look from the stern professor and he knew in his heart that his efforts would not be appreciated. Dr Bates may have looked sugar sweet yet on the inside, she was rotten to the core and would have been even beyond that, if it were possible. Her very aura radiated hate and made sure of her status.
“I rule this place.” Her presence stated. “Even attempt to mess with me and your life will not be worth living. You are nothing to me, all your lives mean nothing to me.”
Now Nora spoke softly and coldly to the trembling young man, whose knees were clearly getting weaker by the second and whose brow was suddenly drenched in sweat. “Simmonds, fetch me the lab equipment.” The man did not move an inch. “Honestly,” Bates smiled sharply – an icy grin – surveying the room as she talked. “Why do all my personal assistants have to be such idiots?” These people were far from idiocy though and Nora knew it; they were selected for their IQ after all. The fear that she inspired here… it made her feel like the most powerful creature in the world.
Bates licked her lips, savouring the taste of terror. For almost a minute, all in the room stood frozen, as if petrified. The doctor sighed and the enchantment – the hold over those in her control – seemed to break. “Simmonds, you know how my last subject ended up, darling.” Simmonds did know, as did everyone at the lab. A collective shudder ran through the room like an electric current; it was not a pleasant thought.
The lab assistant looked terrified. His head twisted and turned, his eyes flickered, searching for a hope to grasp at, a way out - an escape. Simmonds backed towards the open door, but Nora reached it first, there in three long strides. She examined her perfect fingernails, blocking his pathway out, now fast becoming his only chance of survival. Dr Bates took a step forward, groped for the handle and slammed the door with such force that everybody else started. The exquisitely jewelled, expensive high heels began to move towards their personal assistant. Simmonds’ mouth was open in a scream, but no sound emerged from it. He stumbled backwards, knocking over a loaded syringe and a test tube rack. Nora clicked her tongue against the roof of her mouth, the only sound in the otherwise eerily silent room. “I’m losing patience now Simmonds. Being a general, disobedient fool is one thing. Knocking over my precious equipment like the clumsy oaf you are is quite another.”
Simmonds stared at the ground. It was only a matter of time before the punishment came now. “Get in the experimenting chair.” His eyes widened.
“No!” He whispered. “I won’t do it, I won’t!”
“You will.” Spat out Nora, maliciously. “You shall walk to that chair voluntarily or you can paralyse yourself trying to prevent me from dragging you there by force.” Simmonds still wasn’t moving although he didn’t doubt the candour of the threat. Bates pulled his chin up, so that his eyes were facing hers. ‘You will get in that chair now.’ She thought, propelling the idea to her servant telepathically.
‘How are you inside my head? I can hear your thoughts and your voice, what poison have you given me to drive me crazy, doctor?’ His mind was as confused and messed up as he showed on the outside.
‘Silence, human fool.’ Nora dismissed the others in the room with a curt nod.
“Ware, Trylaw, I shall speak to you at the meeting later.” They scuttled away like ants from weed killer. All except one. “Cyan,” Dr Bates sighed, “he sealed his own fate. I have no choice but to punish him for this behaviour. Go.”
Anisha Cyan, age twenty, stared defiantly into the eyes of her employer. “What are you going to do to him?” Her voice trembled ever so slightly, betraying the emotion that she was trying so hard to hide.
“Cyan, go!” Nora snarled. The student crept fearfully out of the room. “And close the door!” At her request, it clicked shut. Nora’s eyes sparkled with malice as she turned back to the lab attendant turned lab rat, examining him like she was the operating surgeon and he the unfortunate patient.
“So Simmonds,” she murmured, tying a gag around his mouth (she was so close to his face that she didn’t need to raise her voice), “the fun begins.”
A/N: and another authors note! woop woop you lucky people! help with actors blah blah blah would be great. i am so bad with celebrity names because i mostly watch animated movies.
