Chapter 2
I'm ten years old and the woman who gave birth to me is passed out on our stairs.
Our neighbor, Mrs Landon, Katie's mom isn't home tonight. She started working after Katie's dad left. I don't know where he went, but he made Katie very sad when he left.
“Mom,” I call softly while shaking her shoulder again.
Nothing, not even a sound from her. It's getting dark out and I don't want her to sleep on the stairs. But I can't carry her up by myself.
I run up the stairs and pull a blanket off her bed. I stop at the small space I sleep in, and grab one for myself. I hurry back to where my mom is still passed out. She's snoring softly now. I fold the blanket around her and huddle close to wall with a blanket of my own.
