The first time it happened Tommy had been blindly drunk.
Never again he said as he woke to find himself in the arm of another man, never again as the man left his home while the streets were still dark and little light was shown on the cold cobbled streets of Birmingham.
He tried to go on about his daily basis, even going to the effort with a new lady on his arm for the evening to show everyone and himself what happened was a lack of judgement and a mistake.
As the weeks continued, no matter how much drink or women Tommy filled himself nothing seemed to satisfy the itch which so desperately wanted to be scratched. He was coming back from a meeting with a interested party in his gin making business which could profit him and his business to a new length when he saw the man he had spent the night with.
Just like that the memories of that night Tommy had wanted to push down came rushing to the surface. How Tommy had invited him to his home knowing no one would be home. They sat in the living room drinking alcohol and sharing stories of the war, it turns out the man used to be in Tommy's ranks yet never met him. Tommy was still blurry on who made the first move but after the mentions of losses and the every growing nightmare of those hellish years Tommy remembered feeling those lips on his.
He remembered feeling the man's stubble tickle hi cheek as they both deepened the kiss. The evening was a rush of activity as Tommy all but dragged him into his room and shutting the door firmly behind him. The man didn't bother commented why Tommy would choose the highest and smallest bedroom, he seemed to understand just fine as he gave him a understanding look.
Tommy continued to look at the man as he stopped the car outside his home. He knew the family would be in, knew there was not a chance in hell he and the man could go unnoticed without as question being thrown at him or be uninterrupted as he wanted to repeat the 'mistake'.
The man seemingly aware of a burning gaze on him turned to find the blue eyed man staring at him. Quirking an eyebrow he saw the repressed smile Tommy had tried not to show as Tommy started the car again and signalled for the man to get in the car. The man smiled and joined Tommy in his car.

This was a secret place, a place not even his family were aware of.
He has made an impulsive buy two years ago. Tommy didn't do impulsive things; not really, not without thinking through how this could benefit him one day. In truth Tommy had been up here twice. Once to see what the inside was like and twice to hide some merchandise.
The house was kept clean by a hired maid who came in every week on a Saturday to clean and then disappear back to her own home. Tommy was beginning to enjoy the fact he had made this purchase as he and the man beside him lay naked underneath the covers sharing a cigarette between them.
It was still strange to Tommy and he would never tell anyone, and he knew he didn't need to tell the man to not say anything either as they both seemed to be in the same boat. After the pair had sex the man shared a joke which seemed to ease the tension of the otherwise quiet room. Tommy learned he was in the liquor business, import and export as it were so he was like Tommy. A business man, a war man.
He wasn't a big talker and Tommy liked that, Tommy also liked he could be as rough as he wanted knowing he wouldn't hurt the man he was screwing. In fact he seemed to enjoy it as Tommy thrusted harder and faster into him. Tommy also loved the fact he was rough with Tommy how he would flip him over and pound into him. He loved feeling the scars from the other man from his past battles rather than the smooth skin of a woman.

It wasn't until four days later Tommy and David went their separate ways until the following month. Both men were to be busy with their up and coming liquor businesses and being a Shelby always had its moments where somebody was going to come after him with a loaded gun.
"Where the bloody hell have you been" Polly yelled as he entered the betting shop, Ada noticed immediately how relaxed he seemed. His shoulders were not tense and he seemed to walk with a easy step.
"I took a short holiday Aunt Pol, nothing to worry about" Tommy placed the cigarette in his mouth ignoring the look Ada was giving him. There was no way she could know.
"Well I hope she was worth it" Polly snapped "because we've got trouble"
Don't we always Tommy thought.
