[This prologue contains the old (and very wrong) belief that women belong in the kitchen, since this was set very far back in time. I do not support it in any way]

He wasn't on his guard when it happened.
Wizardkind hadn't had a threat in a very long time - Merwyn the Malicious had been cut down long ago.
Clyde Pradesh was relaxed as he sat, gazing at the distant, mist-shrouded mountains.
His state of laziness didn't last, however, as a cracking noise erupted from his poky home.

Glancing back warily, Clyde pushed himself to his feet and approached cautiously.
"Hello?" He called into the now-silent house. "Is anybody there?"
Still no response. Clyde bit his lip, preparing to enter his domicile, when something slammed into his back and knocked him to the ground.

Shock coursed through him, and he rolled over to see a beautiful woman sneering down at him.
"Mathilda?" Clyde murmured in confusion. He thought they left each other on good terms. Apparently not.
Mathilda dealt a swift blow to his ribcage, causing him to gasp in pain.
"W-What are you—"

She brushed her dark tresses over her shoulders, and pointed her wand at him without hesitation.
"You were sleeping with another, while I made sure to be the perfect lover and wife." Mathilda hissed. Clyde gulped, his hands trembling. He was at the mercy of this woman - she could kill him within a second.

"You would want death, wouldn't you, Clyde? You'd prefer death over being caught. Too bad I can't offer you that. But I can grant you immortality." Mathilda said, for she knew that death would mean a release of sorts, and immortality would be keeping you in life's clutches. "I am not a killer, Clyde. But I can curse you. I can make you live eternally, with one means of escape."

With that, Mathilda muttered the incantation, and Clyde's back was pushed deeper into the dirt as a flash of red light struck him.
He was no longer given the chance of death.
Suddenly, immortality didn't seem so great, after all.
