Isaac stopped abruptly and held his arm out to stop Katie. She looked at him and spoke in a calm voice.
"What is it?" She asked
"It's an old mining town, maybe we can find some food here. Just be careful. Another one of those things might be here. Or something worse."
"What, one of those zombie creatures?" Katie asked
"Yeah, one of those things, and if, just if, you see one, run and scream. Please just be careful. I can't lose you too. I've lost to many people." Isaac said as a tear rolled down his face.
"Hey, don't cry. It's gonna be ok." Katie reassured. The two of them wandered off in opposite directions of the town. Isaac took the southern entrance whilst Katie searched farther north. The town was rather large and seemed to stretch for miles and miles in all directions. Debris was scattered everywhere. The small shack like buildings were slanted in all sorts of directions, some standing high and some laying low like soldiers doing the army crawl. The wind was cold and bitter, whipping through Katie's hair and slapping the sand, sending punches into the buildings.
The Monster
Katie kept walking as the breeze brushed her cheeks. After about five minutes of walking, she came across a sort of shelter. The door was made of a rusty iron, it was covered in patches of green moss and overgrown vines that were turning brown. The walls were made of cracked stone that was also covered in the moss and something that resembled dried blood. The thought of what was inside made Katie shudder. The door was firmly bolted with five padlocks. Katie walked to the door and picked all of the locks, using all the bobby pins she had had left in her hair that was now tumbling down to her waist. She pushed the door gently.
Nothing.
She pushed it a little harder.
Nothing.
She rammed her side into the door. It budged a tiny bit but it didn't 'open' as such. She grabbed the ends of her brown hair and pulled them in frustration, whilst shouting some curse words. She took ten big steps back, go into a running position and charged at the door. It still didn't do much but there was now a tiny gap in between the door itself and the frame. She stepped back again but jump kicked the door instead of charging. This time, it opened enough for her small build to squeeze through. Once she was inside, she fumbled her hands up and down the door until she finally found a handle. She grabbed it and managed to pull the door far enough that she could get her feet on the gram and her back against the door. With all her strength she pushed her back away from her feet. Slowly, the door opened fully.Katie walked around the room cautiously. She noticed a crowbar standing in the corner that was furthest from her.
It just has to be that corner, doesn't it?! She thought.
She jogged over to the crowbar, picked it up and held it in one hand as she creeped out of the room into the hallway. She shuddered as she looked down the hall. A musky smell hung strongly in the air, it was so strong she felt as though she was going to throw up. She slowly walked down the narrow hall with her back agains the wall. She turned the corner into a small storage room to find another door. There was fried blood splatters all over it. She slowly twisted the handle and opened the door.
She looked around. There was a bloody hand print and smear on the wall that made her shiver in fear. She took a few steps into the room and looked around again. She noticed there was another hand smear along the wall, and it stopped at some sort of gap in the wall, where it looked as though it should have been a cupboard. That's when she knew.
She knew she wasn't alone.
As she thought this, she had taken the crowbar into both hands and held it to her side, ready to attack. She creeped over to the gap, and she heard some shuffling and a low growl. She took some steps back. Suddenly, there was a clatter and a bang. Katie took another step back in horror as a zombie came crawling out. It's skin was almost white, it's face was lopsided and there was no skin on half, showing the white bone that was drenched in blood. It's hands were bony and it's fingers were long, with sharp talons on the ends. It juddered it's head upwards to look at Katie, then it rose to its feet. Katie was about to run forwards and hit the monster, but she wasn't fast enough. The monster has lurched towards her, striking the crowbar out of her hand onto the floor. Katie fell and the monster landed on top of her. She squealed as it's claws went to hit her side, but she caught them. The monster threw its other hand to her face, leaving bloody claw marks down her cheek. She screamed and kicked the monster off of her. She had just enough time to pick the crowbar back up.The monster lurched at her, but she was ready this time. She lifted the crowbar above her head and swung it round, hitting the monsters face. It flew into the wall and fell with a large thud to the floor. Katie ran at it and hit the monster lifeless. After about seven hits, it quivered then it was still. She used the crowbar to lift its head. It didn't react, so she nudged it again. Still no reaction. Without hesitation, she ran out of the building as fast as she could and went to the place she was to meet Isaac.
I just hope he's okay. She thought.Memories
Isaac trudged between the buildings. He came across a large bunker and went inside. The room was dark and cold. It was filled with tables and chairs that were covered in paper and folders. He walked in fully, went to one of the tables and sat himself down. He stared down at the papers and read them. They were all full of rubbish, just a load of stuff about deliveries. He got up and walked around the room, and discovered a door that was open. He walked through and looked into the darkness. He stepped forwards and fell. He tumbled down and down until he hit the floor once more with a thud. He groaned in pain as he sat up and clutched at his head. Slowly, he managed to get up and walked to the wall. There was a light switch, so as you would do, he flicked it and almost immediately the lights flickered on. He gasped in surprise. The room was full of weapons. Guns, bows and arrows, knives, all sorts of needles that seemed to be full of lethal injections. He walked over to the giant wall.He walked up the stairs that e had fallen down, but this time he was carrying a bag full of guns and knives, and a bow and arrows slung over his shoulder. He walked silently out of the building and carried on his trek for supplies.
He walked continuously for about ten minuetes until coming across a small building that looked hopeful. He barged in through the doorway and looked around inside. The room had brick walls that seemed to be covered in a thick and gloopy plaster that looked more like vomit. Against the walls were four beds, each of them covered in a blood red sheet. There was a small set of drawers next to all of them and there were large suitcases at the feet. Looking around, he could sense something good in the room. He walked silently over to the beds, knelt on the floor and looked under them. Under each was a small case full of food. He picked up each one and carried them out of the building and into the next.
The next few buildings he looked in were completely empty. All he could find was junk and paperwork. He continued to walk through the town until he came across an open space in which he sat down on the rough sand. He stared into the distance, trying to think but all he could think about was that they were possibly the only people left on the world. More thoughts rushed through his head, but there was one that just wouldn't get out of his mind. He was thinking about his family.
The thought of his mom Lisa, dad Peter and his little sister Ally who was only ten as those horrid creatures that were running around in their home, tearing each other apart and not having a care in the world anymore made him shiver. He just couldn't stand thinking of Ally as one of those things. He just wished he had taken her with him, but she wouldn't have made the journey. The 16 hour journey they had taken had been on. It had taken 14 train journeys and a 2 hour walk. He remembered that by the time they had reached the bunker Katie had been exhausted and had fallen asleep with her head resting gently on his shoulder. He remembered that the next day she had woken up because the ground shook and the signal came in, the Apocalypse had started. He remembered how she had been so terrified and had whimpered and held his hand. He remembered haw they had sat there in the dark.
He just couldn't get the thoughts of their hometown destroyed and all of their friends gone. He just couldn't get the image of his sister as one of those monsters. He was so scared of what had happened to her, and what had happened to both his and Katie's families. The thought of it just made him want to throw up.
