♛"Remind me why you're dragging me along again?" You asked Ardyn as you struggled to keep abreast with his marching pace.
"Because I require a pretty face, such as yours, to earn their trust," he said dramatically, making you scoff and roll your eyes.
"Why, aren't you pretty enough?" You said dryly, watching his lips twitch into a slight smirk. "How do you know they'll be here anyway?"
"I have eyes everywhere. Trust me, they'll be here," he assured you. "Now, are you confident of the plan?"
"The plan? What plan? We have a plan?"
Ardyn pinched the bridge of his nose, stifling a sigh. "Did you not heed a word I said?"
"Oh, uh, probably not," you said honestly. "Sorry, sorry, what was the plan again?"
"Infiltrate the Prince's party, establish a friendship and coax them into disclosing anything that might be of use. Weaknesses, agendas, anything of that disposition, and report back to me. It ought to be quite simple," he said with mild exasperation.
You waved your hands dismissively. "Okay, okay, got it. Hey, is that them now?"
Ardyn glanced up and a smirk crossed his lips, devilish, a flash of iniquity, then it was gone. "Indeed it is. Now don't mess this up," he warned you as the four young men came into sight of the port. Smoothing down the bits of your hair that were sticking out and fixing the collar of your shirt, you hung back as your companion played his part.
"I'm afraid you're out of luck," Ardyn claimed as he came down the steps, his boots kicking up small plumes of dust and grit.
The troupe stopped a few paces away, the dark-haired man you recognised as the Prince fronting them. "Are we?"
Ardyn gestured to the empty dock behind him. "The boats bring you here," he said matter-of-factly.
The blond boy stepped up, and you caught his eye for a brief second before looking away. "What about them?"
"Well, they'll not take you forth."
"And what's your story?" This was said by the largest of the four men, his frame towering and muscular.
"Nothing of importance," Ardyn returned smoothly. "But with the boats not scheduled to arrive until dawn tomorrow, I shall assume you need to make arrangements for the night. My companion here might be able to assist you with that." He cocked his head slightly, and you stepped up.
"I know a place nearby that will be able to put you up for the night," you said, "if you're interested?"
The four of them huddled together to confer, and Ardyn patted your shoulder on the way past. "I'll leave the rest to you," he murmured, tipping his fedora at the Prince before strutting off. You sighed quietly and went over to the blond, tapping his shoulder. He blinked at you, a spot of colour suddenly appearing on his freckled cheeks.
"So are you guys coming or are you gonna camp outside for the night?"
The tall man wearing glasses stepped forward, nudging his spectacles up his nose. "How do we know we can we trust you?"
You deadpanned. Wasn't your 'pretty face' supposed to be responsible for that?
"Oh c'mon, Iggy. A girl like her isn't going to hurt us, she's just trying to be friendly," the blond answered for you, swinging his arms behind his back playfully. You caught his eye with a smile, the cogs in your mind turning. He seemed easy to fool. Your best bet for uncovering the party's secrets was definitely this guy.
