In the War of 1812, Britain planned an attack on New Orleans in 1814. Andrew Jackson (Just a general back then) lead a force of American soldiers and Native American allies to defend the port. But he also enlisted... pirates. When I learned this in school, nobody else seemed to think that was odd in the least. But all I could think was-- how? Why? Pirates? And being a writer who often uses history for inspiration, I decided to make it into a short story. It's kind of exactly historical fiction, but it isn't supposed to entirely correspond to dates and what actually happened, it's more like fantasy, kind of steampunk?

The small iron-clad boat chugged into the harbour, dragging a wake behind it in the stormy sea. Its small three-man crew was soot-smudged and breathless, all of them wide-eyed and trembling.

"We saw'm!" One cried aloud, pushing himself over the railing of the deck and landing on the rotting wood of the dock. "We saw'm, capt'n! Over there, jus' sittin' in the water like they belong there--"

The tallest of the group of officers that were talking on the far side of the dock looked up sharply. "What's that, boy?"

"We saw'm!"
