Chapter 1: She is not unlucky.

[Edited version]

Beatrice ran towards the nearest place that she could find for shelter. It was raining unusually hard and unfortunately, she had no umbrella. The smell of the ground was starting to make her uncomfortable, much more the rain that soaked her body. She walked inside a cafè, and took a seat infront of a window, the people inside didn't mind that she was dropping droplets of water on the floor. Not like she was the only one.

"What would you like, miss? A hot cup of tea would be nice. It also goes well with our ginger bread cookies.", the waitress, holding her mini booklet and a pen, eagerly waited for a response.

Guess those aren't selling.

"A plate of red velvet cookies please." beatrice looked up to her and smiled. "and i'll take up your offer on the tea." The waitress turned back as she went to another customer. Beatrice's eyes stopped to look at the tv screen as the newsman reported, "An 18 year-old girl was found dead near the streets of brooklyn. Many victims have been found this time of month. We ask you to be always cautious of your surroundings."

The waitress soon returned and placed a plate of cookies and a cup of tea on the table with her eyes also locked on the screen. "looks like they increased. I should really quit already, " She mumbles. "It just sucks that money doesn't rain like this." After looking out the window, the waitress went back to the stall.

Beatrice scoffed at the waitress. She thought it seemed cute. Only one cookie left when the rain became light, She chomped it up and took off immediately before it went dark and the neighborhood would already be locked down.

Her neighborhood had three openings, each with people falling in line. Beatrice casually swifts in line, ducking her head at the side as she sighed, seeing the line was longer than how she saw it from afar. At the front, Each one who went through got strictly inspected. Soldiers in green uniform had their big guns in their arms, ready to shoot anyone who was deemed positive as a changer. As it was her turn, The inspector took a syringe and checked her blood. It was a bright red. With this, they let her pass with no casualties.

The only difference between a changer and a human is that their blood is black and a human is red. After a couple of blocks, beatrice finally arrived home. Her Mother, melinda, stopped what she was doing and frantically embraced her with a hug. "You're back, tris. have you heard the news?  No more going out at night. No. Even at daylight", Melinda told her sternly.

Beatrice looked at her, her lips forming into a thin line, "Yeah.. You know that's not happening, melinda. I have work and we need the money. But I'll take your advice and be careful. " She softly kissed her mother's forehead. "Don't worry too much. I'm not that unlucky." she gave melinda a smile but she got back a frown.

"You better return home immediately and early. You got that, tris?" Melinda pulled away and went to the kitchen. "Have you eaten already?" She got out a plate but returned it after beatrice replied.

"kinda. Went to a café after the rain soaked me. I'm just gonna wash up and rest for a while. I'll come down and eat again later. You can eat without me. " She ran upstairs, but pop her head to the side to be visible to melinda. "Don't sulk while I'm upstairs."

"I am not a kid. I'm your mother, for Christ's sake." She pursed her lips.

"Of course you are."
