An Explosion in the Lunch Hall

Marta, known to you and your sister Blaize as ‘Mum’ asks you to do the dishes and you do. Despite your lack of punctuality, your occasional cursing and your persistent clumsiness, you’re a good person Lina, you are.

That boy, Nick, appears to be constantly on your mind – you know it’s immature to hate people for doing right, but it’s not like you can help what you feel. At least, that’s what you tell yourself. Who are you kidding Lina? Might as well let that guilt sit on our conscience – pretending it’s not there will only make it heavier.

When the china plates have all been stacked on the Crockery Dryer, you relax back into the nearest chair soft chair. As slowly as you sink into the cushions, your mind begins to sink into sub consciousness until your ElectroSlate beeps once again, reprimanding. That’s right, you think, grinning. Mustn’t fall asleep before your Daily Banquet.

In olden days, or so you’ve heard, many people had dietary problems. There was a disease that came when people ate too little and even more problems surfaced when people ate too much. Nowadays, the aim of the society is to make sure everyone is the perfect weight, everyone is equal. The thought of this makes you snort. Equal. Yeah, right. At least the Freemen before the era of the society had a choice.

It’s not like they are very careful about maintaining their ‘equality’ policy, is it though? During the younger years of your life, up to when Blaize was fitted with her ElectroSlate, she would constantly steal your food. Perhaps that’s why you’re thinner than the average girl of fifteen – Blaize only turned ten last month. It makes you different. Petite, unique and different.

You spot Nick across the Banquet Hall and smile politely at him, as you are supposed to. He holds your gaze strongly, but still managing to smile weakly and blush at the same time. So caught up in staring at you is he that he bangs right into the table next to him. His face flames up as his food spatters everywhere. Although you laugh at first, on impulse – that area looks like a nuclear bomb just exploded – you soon jump over the table you’re sitting at (ignoring the scolding beep from you ElectroSlate) to aid him.

As you pick up the mush that used to be Nick’s Banquet, you continue to chuckle underneath your breath. While he grabs the last item of food off the shiny but morsel-covered floor, Nick stares up at you again and sees you laughing. Yet instead of taking offense, he smiles a small, sheepish grin at you, emphasising the cute patch of freckles spread across his nose.

Hmm, you think, as he joins you and your friends at your table, chatting away merrily and accepting the half of your Banquet that you generously give him. Maybe he isn’t so bad after all.
