Chapter 6

Charlotte couldn’t believe this Duke of Lancaster had just asked about her own mother is ways she didn’t dare think.

“I can’t believe how just inconsiderate that... immature... boy was! We take it upon ourselves to take men like him in for a whole week! And they come in and just.. just.. AHH!” Charlotte looked over at Maurie for agreeance, but was met with a giggling school girl.

“Oh Charlotte! He asked the same thing everyone was thinking! I know you’ve thought that most of the time. I don’t understand what this man does to make you so.. mean!” Charlotte thought for a minute, her mean? She could be sarcastic, rude, but no mean! Suddenly there was a rap on the door.

“My darling girls! They have begun the night of entertainment! Hurry, don’t be late! Some of the young men has been asking about you...” Hannah’s tone of voice was evident that she was very excited about tonight. Charlotte’s anger and frustration disappeared and she started getting ready for their night. She took of the heavy brown dress she wore to dinner and put on and elegant blue green dress with a green ribbon wrapped around her bun.

“What a fancy dress! Did mother make you wear it?” Lily’s sweet voice echoed through the room.

“Lily!! Oh it’s been too long my sweet sweet friend!” Maurie jumped up and hugged Lily. Charlotte just laughed as she watched her sister get squeezed to death by her best friend. When Maurie finally let go of poor Lily, she laughed.

“Maurie! I didn’t realize you had come so early. Weren’t you supposed to arrive tomorrow night?”

“I decided to come early. Surprise!” They all laughed together and then turned to Charlotte’s dress again.

“Now, about that dress. I can’t imagine mother will like it. too flowy and.. gorgeous! Where did you get it?” The look on Lily’s face meant she was going to find out one way or another.

“I went into town the other day and picked it out! I wasn’t going to wear it for such an occasion, but it was just sitting in my closet and I couldn’t just let it go to waste on such a fine night!” Charlotte giggled

“I am excited to see what you and Maurie will be wearing this evening...” She stole a glance at Maurie and they both laughed.

“Mine isn’t too exciting. I have to admit, it is just heavy and brown really.” Maurie didn’t sound too enthusiastic,

“Oh Maurie I can’t just let you wear a brown dress you’re not excited for! That would be torchure on both mine and your’s part!” Lily hurried and threw open her closet in search for a dress for Maurie. Maurie stood up and walked toward the open closet just to see dresses upon dresses.

“So many dresses,” She looked back at Lily and Charlotte

“I couldn’t possibly use one of them their all so... pretty.”

“We have too many dresses, we wouldn’t mind if you took a few home with you!” Maurie’s face lit up and she turned back to the closet

“If you insist I might as well try them all on!” They all laughed together remember how fun it was, when they were little and tried on each others dresses all the time and wore them around the house like princess and queens. Suddenly Maurie gasped.

“Where in the world... I mean.. how did you...” When Charlotte saw what Maurie was talking about she immediately understood. There in the back of their closet was a rose colored dress with a diamond encrusted bodice and a long beautiful skirt. The cap sleeved beauty hadn’t been worn in ages, Charlotte remember the beautiful lady, wearing the beautiful dress dancing with a handsome man to a wonderful song. It was her parents when she was 5 and her sister 3 she loved watching her parents dance, and then the political power came and her mother went downhill, she didn’t know her anymore she was distant, and every time she would talk to Charlotte it was mean, sour, and rude. Finally she found herself not wanting to be around her mother, not caring for her, as much as before.
