I walk up to my friend Sayori, a friend that I have known since as long as I remember and we are heading towards the literature club. A place where I really don't belong but I stay because I love the company of others. Especially Natsuki. It's my second day here and she's already my favorite one there. Being apart of a club full of reading and writing is draining when you only like manga, but Natsuki likes manga too. I guess she just makes me feel less alone.
"Oh look, they're finally here." Natsuki groans. I look at the time and we are just under 10 minutes late. Natsuki seems to be waiting for me next to Yuri and Monika, the two other girls in the club.
"Sorry, I wasn't paying attention to the time." I reply.
"You better be sorry! I was waiting for you so we can start the second book of the series!" Natsuki complains. Yesterday me and Natsuki were searching through her manga and I became a bit judgmental so she forced me to read the first book of a series. We read the first few pages but I had to take it home to finish. And now I guess we're reading the second one.
The first book wasn't very interesting but because Natsuki likes it I feel like it's worth a shot.
We go over to the back of the room to the closet filled with manga. She reaches forward the second to top shelf and just barely touches the books. She's very short for her age and very skinny. I wonder if she eats enough food.
"Are you gonna help me or not?!?!?" She stammers.
"Oh yeah I'll get it for you." I say as I grab the book. We sit down next to the window on the floor because desks wouldn't work if we wanted to read with the same book. I mean desks would work but considering I'm closer to Natsuki this way, I won't complain.
"Are you liking the series so far?" She asks.
"Um yeah, It's good." I lie. It isn't good so far but I know it will make her happy if I say that.
"It's just good? This series is hilarious!"
"Well We're just barely through it."
"Ugh well, maybe you should ya know, act a bit more interested." Even when I try to be nice it somehow just doesn't work.
"I'm sorry. I'm enjoying it so far and it's very exciting." I say with much more kindness. I don't know if she acts like this to just me but she's very cranky. I've never seen her be kind to me yet, maybe it's because she isn't getting much food or sleep like I was thinking earlier. Or maybe I'm just trying to sneak into her privacy and it's probably nothing to worry about.
We continue to read. Page after page she slowly gets closer to me. I wonder if she's moving to get my attention because if so it's definitely working. She doesn't move a lot but it's enough for me to notice and enough to get my heart racing. She's intensely staring at the manga as if she's trying to ignore me. Her hand that's holding the other side of the book seems to be shaking a bit. I take a tiny glance at her and her eyes look worried. Now I know for sure that she was aware of moving closer to me. Her eyes start to go numb like she's going to fall asleep. Her eyes don't close completely but she rests her head on my shoulder.
"Um, Natsuki?" I whisper gently. I start to hear snoring in my ear. I decide to let her rest there as I finish up the rest of the book. When I finish, I put the book to my side and try to nudge Natsuki off of my shoulder.
"Hhhh...Um....Did I fall asleep?" She asks .
"Yeah, Only for 12 minutes. I finished the second book of the manga." I answer.
"I'm so sorry. I haven't eaten anything all day and I'm so hungry" she moans. Well that explains why she's always agitated.
"Why didn't you have anything for lunch or breakfast?"
"Because my dad doesn't want to pay for it. He says it's a waste of money."
"So you just starve yourself?!?"
"Well there's nothing else I can do... How about we just stop talking about this" seems like she's back to her moody self.
"Everyone, let's read our poems that we wrote yesterday!" Monika announces. We both get up and dust ourselves off from the cold ground. We fetch for our poems like all of the others do.
I decide to share my poem to everyone but Natsuki and save her for last. I walk up to her and hand her my poem. She reads it in a blink of an eye.
"Umm it's good I guess. I was just hoping for it to be...worse. My poem is terrible compared to yours." Natsuki mopes.
"I'm sure yours is way better. I'm just a beginner." I say.
"You're just saying that to make me feel better." She complains. Natsuki roughly hands me her poem. I skim it over and hand it back to her.
"Well?!?"she hissed.
"It's great. Don't doubt yourself so much." I state. Her poem looks like something a first grader would write but still impressive at the most.
"My style is so childish so no one ever takes it seriously, but I'm glad at least you do."
"It's still a poem that expresses a meaning so it shouldn't be taken any differently."
"Thank you! Someone who finally understands." She smiles passionately. She looks adorable when she smiles like that. Natsuki should smile more often.
"Hey, um because we're friends now, I should give you my phone number so we can text.."she stuttered. She hands me a little folded up piece of crumpled paper.
"Sure, I guess I'll text you when I get home." I agree.
"Looks like today's meeting is over. See all of you tomorrow." Monika beams. I grab my stuff and say good bye to everyone. As I walk out I wave bye to Natsuki and she waves right back at me.
