BOOM!

I jolt upright in my bed. It's never good to here loud crashes during the night. It can only mean one thing. The Dark Ones have arrived once again. "Mom! Stay inside!" I shout as I rush out of my room, grabbing my sword on the way out.

Before leaving, I check the house for my mom. She's not here. Why can't she just stay inside? She's going to get herself killed!

I dash out the front door to find rubble all over town. We have failed this time. The Dark Ones are getting in town and destroying our last piece of hope of living. "Make a barrier of what's left!" I shout and race out into the town into darkness. All I can see is the occasional fire. I head for the woods. That's where I will hide to catch our enemy before they reach town.

I feel a hand grab my arm and pull me back. Before I can scream, a hand covers my mouth. I begin to kick and throw a fit.

"Shhh. It's just me." It's Darren. The fear she felt just a few seconds ago withered away and her body relaxes.

"Gosh darn it Darren! You scared me to death!" Now her fear turned into irritation.

"I'm sorry!" He put his hand up in surrender. "I just don't think coming back here's a good idea.

"And why not?"

"This is where they're coming from."

"Exactly." I said with a smirk plastered on my face.

Out of the corner of my eye, I see another explosion. A figure was running towards it. "That's not a smart person." I mumble. "Hang on, I'll be back." I take off after the runner and stop halfway there. It was my mother.

She was advancing one of them. "Mom, no!" I shouted but it was to late. The Dark One already had pierced her with its oddly shaped sword. It's face peering over her. The tears began to fill my eyes and rage took over my actions. I charged at the creature and slashed at it. "Die!" It sounded so cheesy to yell that as I killed it but at the moment I didn't care. Choked sobs rose inside of me as I made my way over to my mom. "Mom, stay with me! You can't be dead. No I won't believe it." I began to shake her trying to wake her up.

Arms wrapped around my frantic body. "No no no!" I screamed and fought to get free.

"Kyra. Stop. She's gone. You can't save her." Darren had a hint of sadness to his tone. He is really close to my family.

My cries became louder and more pronounced. I turn myself around in his arms and wrap my own around him as I cry into his chest. Never in my life have I felt like this. I was supposed to be used to death but she was the last one in my family. She couldn't be gone.

"They're gone!" I heard someone shout but I didn't move, neither did Darren. He sat there with me in his arms, whispering reassuring things into my ear for at least ten minutes.

Finally, I look up at him. He had red eyes as well with small tears on his face. This was a first for him.

We can make it through this. We will. We want to. We will just have to do it without the support of my sweet mother. She will always be in our hearts though. That will never change.
