Chapter 1
"Ow." I said as my hair was being pulled in different directions. "Sorry sweetie but it's for the Time." said my mom apologetically, as she spun me around so I could see my hair. I had long blonde hair(almost down to my butt) that was tied in a bun with curly strands hanging down, I had big bright blue eyes with long curling lashes, skin that would be clear but not so clear on somedays and lips that weren't round or plump but were just lips. I already had my gown on which was a floor length silky blue and 4inch white sparkly heels to go with my height 5.2 and I'm 16, we had to wear our best clothes for the Time. "We're gonna be late!" yelled my mom from downstairs already dressed in her floor length tan dress. "I'm coming! I'll be right there!" I yelled back to her. "Ok honey I'll be in the car!" I ran to the car as fast as I could in high heels and got in the passenger side of the car, "Sorry mom!". Atleast we are only a block away. We live in a city that's shaped like a square, there's a big wall around us but I don't know why maybe to keep us in or keep something out I don't know. The top of the list is the Timer he lives in the clock at the center of our city, then his most delighted helpers the Time-makers they help him make the laws and make sure everyone follows the time they are also very rich. Then next there's us the Changes I am part of this group and we have good money but do all the regular jobs like nurses, teachers and etc. At the bottom is the Constants they are the poorer of the group, they have to do the farming but also might have to scavenge for food because some might not have jobs. "We're here." said my mom. We couldn't have gotten here soon enough this is the day every 16 year old dreaded the most, Time. We got out of the car and went to sit in front of the stage, this event was held every year at our city's park. On the stage where 3 chairs with 3 different people seated on them, behind them was a big arch. Each person represented a different section, Time-maker, Change and Constant. To be a Timer you had to be of blood. In the middle of the stage in the front was a microphone. Then someone came walking to the microphone. "Ahmm." The Timer cleared his throat to get everyone's attention. "Lady's and gentlemen, Time-makers, Changes and Constants and children. We have gathered here today for our 36th Time. Our population is 167,355 most of which is children so today and like we have done for 35 years we will chose 100 different 16 year olds to move a section, those who are not called will be able to stay in there section. Now for our first person to be chosen," he reached into his suit pocket to get out an envelope "is Sydney Valuseur her old section was Time-maker and now she is a Constant! Come up and go through the arch where you will wait for the other children that will join you once they are called." Sydney got up from where she was sitting with her 2 little brothers and mom and dad, already crying. She walked through the arch. God I was so happy that I didn't have any siblings or a father only a mother. I had a father once but someone told me that he got banished to the outside beyond the wall when I was 7. Usually if you got chosen to move you wouldn't get a chance to say goodbye to your family which is why I did one hour before.
One Hour Before
I was crying, "I don't want to leave you all alone they could take you." "Sweetie they won't take me." said my mom. "I like being a Change." "Just think of the better opportunities you will have." "Ya but only if I get picked to be a Time-maker." "It'll be alright sweetie, just don't worry about it you'll get worry wrinkles." she said trying to be funny, as she pulled me in for a hug and kissed my cheek. I just couldn't laugh, this could be the last time I ever talk to her.
"Clark." I was back to the present with my name being called. "Mom what." "Where you zoning out again?" "Ya maybe." "Well they got through- She wasn't able to finish as her name was being called on the microphone. "Clark Morris is from Change and she will now be a Constant! Go join the rest in the back!" Oh god no. Not a Constant. How could this be? I quickly hugged my mom walked on the stage and went through the arch.
