Chapter 1
Not Edited
“Miss Smith, would you please go to the office. Your brother is here to pick you up.” Emma’s teacher, Mr. Bey announced. Everyone in the class’s heads turned to look expectantly at Emma. Slowly, she got up and hurriedly collected her supplies.
On her way to the office, many explanations went through her head for her brother’s random visit. Maybe Daniel, her older brother, was going to take her to lunch. Maybe her “Sperm Donor” came back, or her mom wanted them over. None of the explanations fit. It was in the middle of sixth hour.
When she got to the office, Emma saw Daniel pacing with a nervous expression on his face. “Daniel what’s the matter?” Emma questioned, she was worried when she saw sympathy flash through his eyes. “Is everything all right?”
“Em, we need to get to the hospital. I will tell you why in the car.” Daniel answered. Emma didn’t need and explanation, she was already out the door.
As they got in the car Daniel pulled out his keys with a shaky hand. You could hear the rattle and clanging as the keys hit each other. Daniel put them in the ignition and they peeled out of the parking lot.
“Mom was mugged. The mugger stabbed her in the stomach and she lost a lot of blood…” the rest of Daniel’s words began to blur. Emma couldn’t think anymore. Her mother was loosing blood and most likely in surgery. She was devastated.
It was her fifteenth birthday after all.

After they got to the hospital they were sent to the waiting area outside of where their mom was having surgery. An hour or two later a doctor came out of the surgery with blood covering his scrubs. Her brother quickly got up to talk to the doctor. Once they got out of hearing range they had and intense conversation. Her brother looked as if he had tears coming out of his eyes and he was pleading. When he came back all he said were words she didn’t know if she wanted to hear or not.
“She’s peaceful.”
And she knew what he meant.

“May she rest in peace.” They all said at the funeral. Emma had nonstop tears in her eyes. She wore a black dress that tied around her neck and went down to her knees. She wore black jewelry, black makeup, black nail polish, and even the tips of her blonde hair were dyed black.
After the funeral, Emma couldn’t see them bury her mother. It was too painful, so she went home to pack her stuff. She was moving in with Daniel who just happened to have an apartment across the state. He worked as a construction worker. Apparently she would be transferring schools so far into the year.
She made sure to grab her pictures and her clothes for the move. Her eyes remained on the picture of her and her mom at the beach. It was taken last year to celebrate Emma’s victory in a skate competition. She forgot which one though.
