You stand shivering on a step
Water waves swiping at your feet.
While the sun glares upon your back,
The water waits like a monster,
Recoiled, ready to attackFinally, you plunge head first.
A mist shrouds out all sounds and sights.
Your arms row fast, yet your kicks flail.
Lungs are squeezing, while your head hops
And sinks like a ship with no sail. But in between each desperate heave
And gasping for a second wind,
When your head goes below the waves,
Time seems to slow to a stand still.Cocooned from the sun and the crowds
Bellows, the body follows
The sail of purpose in your mind,
Leaving a sea of fear behind
The kicks and breaths now row in time,
Driving you to the finish line.
