Something just wasn’t right. He turned. Nothing. He turned again to see the outline of a dark figure against the backdrop of an eerie forest. The same forest as it had always been. The same outline too. Tall, about 5’11, fists clenched; Daniel always thought that if he saw them the knuckles would be white. Unruly hair framed what looked like a strong jaw. I’m waking up soon thought Daniel as he saw the figure begin to turn, the same as always. Something short and slim came into view, sticking out of the figures stomach; that’s what Daniel had grown to call it; the figure it had a mysterious feel to it and seemed to fit the actual figure perfectly. Once the figure had turned about 90 degrees, so that Daniel was facing its side he woke up.
A large gasp broke, what must have been a sleepy silence, from Daniel’s mouth as he sat straight backed on his rumpled bed sheets. Sweat stuck to his forehead and Daniel tried to calm his laboured breaths all the while telling himself off for being “So freaked out,” ”Every night , Every night I have this dream you’d think I’d be used to it but oh no, I wake up ready to scream the house down,” he muttered to himself as he clambered out of the bed checking the clock out of habit on his bed side, he didn’t need to anymore , he always woke up at four minutes to seven every morning since the dreams began. He tried not to trip over the stray clothes strewn across the floor, the forgotten books with broken spines lying in unexpected nooks and crannies, the CD cases which found themselves littered on the floor. “Safe to say my rooms a mess,” mused Daniel as he collected a towel on his way out of the door, heading for a shower.
On leaving the shower Daniel made a detour to his room to collect some clothes and get changed before bounding down the stairs to make some breakfast. It wasn’t until he was pouring the kettle to make some coffee when he noticed a girl about his age maybe younger sitting at the kitchen counter, her head resting on her hands which were propped up by her elbows. She had short light brown hair cut around her ears spiked up in a pixie style. Pixie seemed to describe her as a whole now that Daniel really looked at her. She had a small face that looked so innocent but had darkness too that Daniel couldn’t quite understand. She had a small frame that looked as if one touch would shatter. Her hands Daniel could see were small and dainty; a bright blue colour adorned her eyes which were currently staring at him intently. “Hello Daniel, I didn’t know that you would be up so early,” spoke a voice that Daniel hadn’t heard in about a month.
“Hi mum,” No matter how long it had been , Rosie still could not get over the striking resemblance her son had with his father. Her son stood in front of her with his head down- unruly black hair falling in thick waves over his face, his eyes peaking through the strands, a piercing grey. Daniel was taller than he had been the last time she had seen him which must have been about a month before. He must have grown about 5 inches Rosie thought as she decided that Daniel must be about 5’10.
You could have cut the tension with a knife. It was unbearable. It was set out as if two different chess pieces on opposite sides of the board. Ready for battle. “For the love of... Somebody say something!” Exclaimed the girl suddenly. Daniel jumped in surprise whipping his head round to look at the petite girl in wonder. He didn’t think that such a small girl could have such a loud voice. “Who is she?” asked Daniel as he pointed a long finger somewhere in the girls direction as he turned to look back at his mum. “I’m not an idiot I can tell my own name,” said the girl. Silence followed. “This is normally when you say something along the lines of ...” She cut Daniel off “,My name is Alex and your mother is looking after me for a while because I didn’t want to be at... home” “Well Alex, mum I’m going to school so, see ya later,” He attempted to run out of the kitchen making a dash for the door grabbing the school bag he had dumped in the empty hallway earlier on. “Daniel! Wait!” shouted his mum. “Darn not fast enough,” mumbled Daniel,”Yes oh mother dearest” “You know I don’t appreciate the sarcasm Daniel, anyway you’re taking Alex to school with you. No buts,” ordered Rosie “But...” “No buts! Look I know she is two years younger than you but for now she is in all of your classes and that’s final!”
