Alyson Noël

Alyson Noël didn’t always want to be a writer. At first she wanted to be a mermaid or a princess like any other girl, until she finished her first Judy Blume book. From then on she wanted to fulfill her dreams in becoming a writer. She learned to read with Horton Hatches the Egg by Dr. Seuss, she even kept the original copy for sentimental reasons. Alyson wrote her first novel in 2005, called Faking 19 (Alyson Noel Official Biography).

Alyson Noël has been recognized for many accomplishments during her writing career. Her writing appeals mostly to teens and young adult readers. She has gotten acknowledged for her work when she had become a New York Times Bestseller 8 times during the span of 2 years.  She has had 6 million copies printed; they have been translated into 37 different languages, and even were sold in 50 other countries besides the United States. In total, Alyson has written 23 books to date and presumably many more to come (Alyson Noel Official Biography).

The book that I have picked to read by Alyson Noël is Evermore. Ever Bloom is a spunky cheerleader, always being noticed for her blonde hair and beautiful looks, until her family dies in a car accident leaving Ever to live with her aunt, Sabine. From the vehicular accident, she is left with a scar on her forehead and unusual psychic powers. Ever is able to see people’s auras, read their thoughts, and just by contact of the skin she can know everything about them. She soon excludes herself from her classmates at her new school as she is labeled as a freak. When she meets the new kid Damen Auguste, she cannot read his thoughts, know his life story, or see his aura. Ever is astonished by this because the only people whose auras she can’t see are dead. If I had to pick my favorite character I would probably pick Ever Bloom because she is so down to earth and calm about things that are changing in her life. She believes in keeping a low profile and not bringing attention to herself. When Damen starts to admire Ever, I was concerned about her well-being since people never really noticed her. The major relationships consist of Damen and Drina (Damen’s wife, but separated), Ever and Damen, Sabine and Ever, and Ever with her best and only friends, Miles and Haven.

“She laughs and let’s go, licking her thumb and aiming for the tarnish tattoo she left on my cheek, but I raise my hand and beat her to it. Not because I'm grossed out by the thought of her saliva (I mean, I know she's healthy), but because I don't want her to touch me again. Touch is too revealing, too exhausting, so I try to avoid it at all costs.” In this excerpt from Evermore, you notice that Alyson is very detailed about the senses that she uses in her book. With these senses, you notice that she is trying to become very descriptive about Ever’s hearing and sense of touch. Alyson’s sentences seem long, but very descriptive. She creates a world of attachment to the story line with her wording and sentence structure. Alyson mentions a wide variety of detail within each sentence; it’s hard to not feel like you are actually in the story.

Ever Bloom is around my age making it easy to relate to her social life and family problems. She separates herself from groups sometimes too. Ever is also very smart about her actions. She can communicate very well with others when she wants too.

Evermore is a fabulous book. So far I have read this book 7 times in that past year. I have continued to read this series. Alyson Noël is an amazing writer; with her descriptive details and outstanding vocabulary. She has made me enjoy reading books these past two years.
