When Amanda and I got to her mom's store, we walked inside to be greeted by Mrs. Kendra Allister, Amanda's mom. Kendra was wearing her favorite knee high blue dress with black accents, the only dress she wears at least every week. Her hair was a brighter blonde and longer than Amanda's, but she kept it curly. "Hey ladies what are you both doing here? Shouldn't you be in school? Especially you Mandi!" Kendra said as she leaned against the front desk. "Mom please don't call me that I'm not four anymore. The only reason we're here is because Chelsie needs her hair fixed... badly". Amanda looked back at me before turning around to her mom. "Have her come over to my station and let's see the damage". Her mom turned on her shoes and headed to her station.

She spun her chair around for me and gave me a gentle smile. I sat down, and she looked at me innocently. "Chels can you take your hoodie off for me, so I may see what we are dealing with". I gave her a saddened look and pulled my hoodie over my head. She gasped as my hair and face was revealed to her. Grabbing at my hair she sighed at the sight of my nappy, uneven and jagged hair. All I could do was look down in shame. This was embarrassing for me. Kendra got down on one knee and put her fingers under my chin lifting it up, so I would look at her.

My eyes now puffy again and releasing tears. "Chels did your mother do this to you?" All I could do was let more tears fall as I slowly nodded. "No more Chels. You are coming to stay with us for a while okay. I am not having you be abused. This is unacceptable. You're like a daughter to me. I'm going to get you out of that house, but until then let's cover up this nasty bruise and fix your beautiful hair. What do you say?". I nod again and smile. Kendra has always been so nice to me. I wish she was my birth mother rather than the devil I lived with. She placed a soft kiss on my forehead and wiped my tears before putting the cape on me and facing me towards the mirror.

Kendra measured out my hair and evened it out for me. Then giving it a nice warm wash and dry she styled it up for me. My hair was now just below my ears and had some shine to it. She even added a pretty streak of purple in it for me. Afterwards she put some make up on my face to cover up my bruise and add some color to my face.

When she finished I stood up and gave her a hug. Thanking her for everything, I slipped my hoodie on, now feeling better than I did walking in. Kendra, rubbing my back, handed me a spare key to her home. "Have Amanda drop you off at home and you get some of your belongings. Don't worry about clothes I will take you out to get some new ones. Then just walk to the house it's the same as always. Amanda must take her brother to basketball practice. Just make yourself at home and we should be home around seven." Kendra took the key attaching it to my necklace and put it around my neck. I hugged her again and she placed another kiss on my forehead. Then Amanda and I hopped into her car and drove off to my house. It was only ten in the morning, so my parents should be at work. If they aren't then I'm severely screwed.

After a good half hour drive, we pulled up to my house. "Drive around the block so incase my parents are home. It should only take me five minutes.". Amanda gave me a stern look as I stepped out of her car. "If you aren't out here and in my car in the five minutes I'm giving you, then I'm calling the police". Amanda was being serious, and I don't really blame her.

I closed her car door and ran to my front door. As soon as I opened the door, the foul stench of cigarettes hit my face. My parents smoked heavily, and I hated it. Atlas, dad's German Shepard, walked up to me and jumped up licking my face. He is the only member of my house that's nice to me. I push him back onto the floor and pet his head as I head to my room.

Looking at the clock on the wall I only have three minutes to get outside. I grab the duffle bag that was under my bed and start throwing my stuff into it. I put my photos, stuffed bear Amanda gave me years ago and some of my shoes. Plus, a couple jackets, clothing and a blanket. Then I go into my parent's room, rummaging around, looking for the pistol my father owned. After finding it under the mattress, I put it in the waist of my jeans. Before leaving their room, I swipe the three hundred dollars my mom stole from me.

Atlas whimpers at me and looks towards the door as I put the last of my belongings inside. I stand and walk towards the door, but before I reach it my mother opens the door and stares right at me.

"Chelsie Marie! What the hell are you doing home? More importantly, what the fuck is in that duffle bag?" My mother, now livid, closed the door locking it. I turn to look at the clock, now with the big hand the five, I start thinking of a plan to escape. Hopefully Amanda has phoned the police. "Chelsie, I asked you a fucking question!" My mother, now walking towards me, throws her keys and purse onto the floor. I must think fast, because if she grabs me I'm done for. Without giving it another thought, I booked it into my room and locking the door. Using my quick thinking, I pushed my chair against the door, but I know it won't hold long. Immediately without hesitation I try opening my window.

Outside Amanda is on the phone, hopefully with the police. I start banging the window to get her attention as I hear my mother banging on the door. "You little shit you are so dead when I get in your room!" My mother was getting agitated by the minute and I surely wasn't wanting to get hit again. I started screaming at the top of my lungs as tears began to fall down my cheeks. "Amanda help me please. She's here please help me I'm scared!". Amanda looks up at me and yells into her phone before dropping it and running to me. "Chels it's going to be okay. The police are coming." We both push as hard as we can, trying to open the window, but as soon as it starts to break way my mother bursts inside. " I got you now Chelsie"My mother walks up to me as Amanda screams and beats the window.

Latching her hand to my hair, she pulls me down to the ground and hops on top of me and throws punches. I try covering my face, but her fists pierce through my arms and hit me in the eye. Amanda, still screaming, beats on the glass watching me get hit after hit in my face. Tears roll down my face as I scream and kick my feet trying to get free.

Instantly, I remember the gun that I had placed in my waist band earlier. Without a thought I pull the hammer back while its in my pants and then I quickly pull the pistol back and shoot at my mother. She falls back up against my bed as she grips her left shoulder. The bullet flew out of her shoulder and into the wall above my bed.

As she laid on the ground, sirens were heard from a distance. Quickly putting the safety on, I put it back into my pants, slipping my bag around my neck I run, and I don't stop. I open the back door letting Atlas run freely with me. Together, we run through the trees and further into the woods. I can't let Amanda see me and I surely don't want to go to jail for attempted murder. But just like in the stories, a sheep can only run so far from the wolf.
