It was the first day of freshman year, and sadly all freshman on the buses had to go through the worse thing you could imagine, having seniors yelling "WELCOME FRESHIES!" at the top of their lungs.
Now I know what your thinking, 'where's this chick going with this?' But you need to have this background. So know imagine me a freshie who had only woke up 30 minutes ago now scared outta her mind and it was only 7:04. All of us ninth graders had been corralled in by these tall giants of seniors and I had no idea where any of my friends where.
So I did the most obvious thing that I should do in this type of situation. Tried to find my friends, and I did. Or well I thought I did. I saw who I thought was my tall friend Cody and ran over to him and what I did next was...well...not well thought out.
Running over I leaped on the guy's back and screamed in his ear "Hey! Give me attention." Now, that was not the smoothest move especially when I'd only seen the guy's back.
He turned his head with a confused look on his face, "Do I know you?"
This was the longest 3 seconds of my life, either I say 'no sorry wrong person' and look like a fool or I play off of it. I undoubtedly chose the latter option. And #NoRegrets if I say so myself.
"Yeah...?" I slowly drawled out. Oh yeah, I was definitely regretting it now.
"Well then, nice to see you again kid. I'm Jack."
That was it, the moment I knew that although there was an unspoken boundary between seniors and freshman I knew that I might not be such a big leap after all. And it wasn't 'lovey' type feeling but it was the feeling of knowing that a friendship can be formed in any situation.
Honestly knowing that that imaginary line had been crossed proved to me that there was something more than staying in your area's limits. And maybe just maybe that might've been the whole point of traumatizing the freshies. To know that a close bond of friendship can form if you just stray from the lineup, even if it is by accident.
