James and his mother were at the dinner table, family banter and more planning for the new family member. James was mostly quiet, even when she was talking about names again and how to re-decorate James' room for the baby. He just nodded and ate.
James was five months along and feeling better. Slept less but felt more energized, same sleep schedule as his mom with her craziness. They talked and talked until James spoke up.
"Mom, I need to tell you something."
"Hm? What?"
"So you know Jordan, right?"
"Yeah, your friend," she smiled. She took a bite of her steak.
"Yeah well... Him and I, with some other friends, formed a group and we're planning on moving to Colorado." She chewed her food and swallowed.
"Awe man, too bad for Jordan and your friends, you have to stay here and watch Pe- the baby." She pouted and took another bite.
"Jordan is coming here, staying a couple of weeks, and he's leaving..."
"Okay? Weird ass sleepover but I won't judge."
"With me, mom."
She froze before her teeth sunk into her next bite. She put her fork down and looked at James. Her eyes shifted from James to his baby bump, back and forth. She tries to speaks, but her vocals were shaking.
"You're leaving... And taking my grandson with you?"
"I'm sorry, I have to go sooner than later. It's for me and him. Mom, please understand."
She took a bit, sniffling and trying to hold back tears. James laid his hand on her's, smiling at her. She couldn't, she broke down and hugged James, crying deep into his shoulder. James rubbed her back and let her ball her eyes out. She then whined, "I'm just sad I won't hold Peter when he's born!"
"That's not hi-" James stopped and sighed, "... I know, mom."
A few days passed by, James and his mom drove to the airport to pick up Jordan. They greeted each other and such, Jordan commented on James' pregnancy and said he looked bigger in person. James punched his shoulder really hard. They drove back home and fixed Jordan a sleeping area on the floor in James' room.
Jordan just helped with getting all the baby stuff ready and packed, also making sure James is not too overwhelmed when it's time to board the plane. James' mom did her best as well, making every moment count and taking many pictures.
A few more days passed and James and his mother drove to the clinic to have another ultrasound checkup, leaving Jordan at home. Some boring talking before James laying down and lifting his shirt up. The doc got all the equipment and started the ultrasound, not too long before seeing the flexing baby on the screen. They both smiled.
Some measuring on how long the baby was and how fast his heart was going, then James' mom asked what he was doing while it was happening. The doctor checked and looked closely. He smiled and looked at the two. "Well, judging by the jaw movement and the fact his hand is to his mouth; he's sucking on his thumb." Both of them smile bigger with small gasps.
"My grandson is adorable," James' mom squealed. James nodded and kept staring, still weird to see that tiny person moving. He then shifted his eyes to his mom, happy to see the little thing but sad to see it go.
After that, they get the pictures and head home. It was silent and James didn't want to say anything to start something. He kinda wanted to wait and give the baby to his mom but that's too much paperwork and time, plus he needs to leave soon.
It was the day before the plane day, so James' mom had one last gift. She got the small box and walked up to his room, slowly opening the door. "James... I got something for-" she stopped and saw Jordan on James' bed, laying on his back and looking at his phone with earbuds in. Jordan looks over and puts his finger to his lips, telling her to hush.
"He's sleeping," he silently mouthed.
She got closer and awed. James was hugging Jordan's side and head resting on Jordan's chest, sleeping soundly and peacefully. She made some hand gestures and mouthing some words, asking if they are dating. Jordan rolled his eyes and shook his head. James hugged tighter and rubbed his cheek against Jordan's chest, mumbling.
She giggled but reassured Jordan she will not tell anyone. He rolled his eyes again and went back to the video. She left and sighed, he's in good hands.
Day of takeoff, James' mom was on the phone with James. One last goodbye before hours of silence. They argued since she was nagging and James had to snip it in the butt. Bickering and more baby talk that was more baby shouting. It roughly ended off with a, "Okay, love you too."
She ended the call and sighed. She made her way to the kitchen and got some leftover food and a plate. Served herself and warmed it up in the microwave, staring at the plate as it turns. Once done, she got the plate and sent it down on the table.
Instead of having three plates, she has one.
However, she smiled. Once her grandson is born, James will call her and show her his cute little baby face. He may never get to be held by her as a newborn, but she will snuggle him with love and goodies when he comes to visit. Big, walking and talking, maybe share some stories that James will not share just because he's an ass. He could ask about stories when James was small or when she was small herself. Ask about what she likes and tells her what he learned in school and what his favorite things in the world.
For now, peace and quiet, she will worship this before a tiny devil ruins it.
