A lot can happen overnight. Even if it appears small, it can affect everything.

The night started off fairly normal, I was babysitting my little brother Lucas while our mom was gone out to work, which I was used to, as she worked a lot. I did what I usually do most evenings, I made sure Lucas had his homework done, I let him play the playstation with me for an hour, then I sent him up to bed, as it was late.

I go up to check on him and make sure that he was ready for bed. He may be ten years old, but boy can he be like a 5 year old at times. I go into his room, and he's lying in bed. "Did you brush your teeth?" I asked, while proceeding to sit on the edge of the bed. "Yep!" he grinned, showing me his teeth while doing his cute boxy grin. "good, now do you want me to read you a story or are you 'too old' for that?" I teased, which I usually do, but all brothers tease each other every now and then, well, we do anyways. "Aidennnn you always read me a story! You have to!" Lucas pouted. See what I mean by him acting like a child? "Of course I will stupid, now quick go pick one before i change my mind!" I laugh, watching him run over and pulling a book off the shelf. "Can we finish reading this one? I wanna know what happens to Harry when he meets Voldemort!" Lucas urged, handing me a book titled 'Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire" "Yeah sure" I laughed, proceeding to read the story to him. Not long after, he falls fast asleep.

Even though he's annoying, I do love him really. To be honest, he looks a lot like mom. Even though he looks more masculine, he still has a soft angelic look about him. His hair is coffee coloured, and is fluffy but sinuous at the same time. He has mom's eyes, doe-like, and filled with innocence. He is average height, about 4'10, with a slim figure, since he constantly runs around outside, usually playing football. People often say that we look really alike, that I'm the more grown up version of him. My hair is the same colour as Lucas' hair, but i have the sides shaved, and I left the top longer. My jawline is also sharper, and i'm about 6'0 in height. I often get told I have a "barrel chested" figure, as I have broad shoulders, and my chest is fairly large, and curves outwards. I see in a way how we look similar, but at the same time I don't, as he looks innocent and pure, and I look the polar opposite. We all have the same eye colour, which is forest green, and soft sun-kissed skin, which compliments our hair and other features well.

I kiss his forehead goodnight, and go into my bed, and at some point I must have fallen asleep, because I woke up to a loud bang. I rub the sleep out of my eyes and i check my phone. Mom texted me saying that she won't be home until tomorrow, and I suddenly get really worried. There's another bang. I run into Lucas' room and he is nowhere to be seen, but there is a small letter on his locker. I open the letter, and it says "Meet me in the graveyard." in someone else's handwriting. It wasn't Lucas' usual scrawly writing, this time it was more cursive, and in joint.

Panicking, I put on a shirt, some runners, and a hoodie, and I run as fast as I can to the graveyard. The graveyard is on the other side of town, so I take a shortcut and I hop a fence and run through an estate which leads to the other side of town. When I eventually arrive, I can't see or hear Lucas anywhere. I look over towards the back of the graveyard, where a hooded man is digging. I sprint over to where the man is digging, and he is burying a coffin, but I can hear something muffled inside it. Without thinking, I grab the shovel off the man, and I hit him in the head, leaving him unconscious. I dig up where he had covered the coffin, making a slope, and I pull it out of the hole. Using the shovel, I ram the coffin open, revealing Lucas, looking weak and in pain. I try to hold back tears as I lift him out, and I carry him to a nearby hospital. The doctors quickly take him into the emergency room, leaving me alone in the waiting room. I ring mom and tell her what happens, and soon after she is at the hospital.

We were waiting in the hospital for over six hours, and the entire time I couldn't get the image of Lucas out of my head. He was bruised, and there was some blood on his clothes. He was much paler than usual, and I remember his breathing being very shallow, but he was breathing, that was the main thing.

Soon after we are called into the room. The doctor comes in, looking at us with with a forlorn look in his face. Before he even says anything, I feel my heart and my stomach plummet to the floor. "We tried everything that we could, but I'm so sorry, he didn't make it." The words ring in my ears, and I freeze. I hear mom start to cry, but I can't take my eyes of Lucas, his lifeless body lying in the hospital bed. You know those moments when you're so sad that you can't even cry, or even react? It was definitely one of those moments. I hold his hand, hoping that it would somehow bring him back.

Since that day, I always visit the grave. We buried Lucas with Dad, who died in a car crash two years ago. I made sure that his favourite football with him, as he always played with it, and I always leave flowers every time I go to visit the grave with mom. Since that day I have never taken anything for granted, because you never truly know if it will always be there.
