IA POV

"NO! No! You can't take my babies away! IA, IO, please! Don't leave me!" My mother screams, trying to push through the soldiers. I cast a sad glance backward.

"We have to. It's what we were born for. You knew this when you had us." I stop to call to her.

"C'mon, sweetie. Everyone's waiting." The nice woman in a suit pats me on the back. I look up at her towering form.

"I LOVE YOU!" My mother cries. I look back and see that she's fallen to her knees, sobbing into her hands.

"I love you, too."

They shove us into a sleek black car, telling us of how beautiful the school is. How we'll learn to fly the planes they provide us. They assure us that it's completely protected and that no one could ever enter the facility.

I don't understand most of what they're saying. We'll protect our country? We're five years old, we can't protect ourselves, and definitely not the whole country.

I had known we were born for this. That we would be flying planes for our country one day. But they didn't give us any other details. Until now. When we couldn't change our decisions.

"What makes us special?" I ask, leaning forward in my car seat.

"Honey..." The woman leaves the words hanging in the air.

I swing my legs back and forth while I wait. And wait. And wait.

"How can I put this..." She trails off again.

Deciding to move it along, I say, "Any way you want."

A tight smile forms on her sweet features.

"You're part of a species sort of like super humans. This species...it has a knack for learning. And various performing arts. We found them through they're amazing singing talents, so we called them Vocaloids. Are you following so far?" She meets my eyes in the rear view mirror. I nod.

"Good. The government decided to find the descendants of this species born with its unique abilities. The children with abilities are born every two generations. The newest generation is here, so it won't be just you two in your classes. We've gathered them all, once we knew that all the families had had children in this generation. I'm sure you'll get along with them." She smiles, and I finally lean back in my seat. Her explanation seemed dumbed down, and kind of brief. Did she really think that I thought like a regular child? Maybe she didn't know the academic courses my mother put IO and me through. I made a mental note to read up about my species.

I glance over to my little brother, then reach out for his hand. "IO, do you miss mom?" I ask. He turns his big blue eyes on me.

"Yeah."

The car ride was a long one. The scenery changed from cities to trees and the morning had changed to afternoon. IO had fallen asleep a while ago, and it was just silence between me and the woman.

I think her name was Aki.

"We're here!" Aki grins, and I feel the car come to a halt. "Someone will get all your stuff, so we'll just go on in." She checks her watch. "The children should be watching a movie."

Soon, we're out of the car and IO and I are each holding one of her hands. We're basically in the middle of nowhere, and there's absolutely nothing around except for this mountain like mound.

Aki leads us to this shining silver door in the middle of the bottom of the mound. "Welcome, Agent Parker." I stare in wonder as a voice comes from a screen to the left of the door. Then, to my amazement, the door slides open. "This is your new home, kids."

The gleaming white tunnel stretches on for what seems like forever, at a slight downward angle. It's broken at even intervals by colorful doors. When Aki takes us inside, the metal door shuts and my eyes are forced to adjust to the artificial light.

"This is amazing!" I squeal, pulling away from Aki and running down the tunnel.

"IA!"

I stop and turn, cocking my head to the side.

"Don't just run away in this place! It's practically a maze designed to trick attackers. You'll know your way soon enough, but right now, please stick close." Aki picks up IO and walks fast to catch up with me.

I sigh at her instructions. "Fine." I grumble, letting her lead me down the tunnel and into a room with no door.

"This is the break room." She explains in a whisper, looking at the children crowded around the TV. "A lot of those kids will be your classmates." She states, bringing me over to the kitchen.

I climb my way up on to a bar stool and Aki sets IO down in my lap. My arms immediately wrap around him. "Kyo, will you pause the movie? We have two new arrivals." A brown haired boy sitting on the couch picks up the remote from the side table.

The room goes quiet, causing me to fidget in my seat.

Aki clears her throat and all eyes are on me. "This is IA and IO. Please welcome them with open arms!" Aki demonstrates by raising her arms in the air.

The next thing that happens startles me. They start cheering.

A certain teal haired boy catches my attention. Our eyes meet and he flashes me a bright smile.

Maybe this place really would be worth leaving my parents forever.
