Mi-Jung Hwang should have noticed the red flags earlier. If she had, her situation would not be so bad. How did it even end up like this? She was only supposed to test a game for a developer named Ray. Now she was caught in a life or death situation.
"Fuck!" She yelled, throwing the pillow against her wall. She needed to calm down. Mi-Jung took several deep breaths and closed her eyes.
...
The man, Unknown, had explained to her that he was testing a dating simulator app. She agreed, being as naive as a small puppy. The game sounded very interesting after all, and she didn't have much to do. She was a year out of college, and was trying to get a job anyways, this sounded much better than the jobs she had applied for too.
She was told a car would be sent to her. She just needed to hold tight for a few minutes.
She made a call to her mother, and her friends, explaining, in a lightly fabricated way, what she had just done.
As she hung up, the car arrived. Her phone rang with an incoming call.
It was Unknown.
She picked up.
"Hello." She said.
"Ah you picked up!" He sounded so cheerful. "Well, you should get in the car, and the driver will take you to the gaming headquarters, okay?"
"Alright, I'm excited." Mi-Jung said.
"Thank you." She was about to get in, but then asked "do I need anything other than what I have on me now? Or are we stopping at my place allow me to gather my things?"
"What you have on you will be fine." The driver said, ushering her into the car.
When inside, she noted how tinted the windows were, and briefly considered the possibility that she was being abducted. She should have followed that train of thought more.
They arrived at the headquarters after a two hour drive.
A man who was not the driver opened the door. He wore a scarlet blazer over a waistcoat and cravat, his green eyes shone with excitement, one Mi-Jung usually associated with a child. He had white hair that was smoothed down.
"Hello, I'm Ray, well, you know me as Unknown," he presented a gloved hand to her. She accepted and was placed outside the car.
"Mi-Jung." She said. "Hwang. Oh wow." She took in her surroundings. They were at what looked like a lavish hotel. Like those in all the cheesy romantic movies where the man and woman first meet awkwardly and then fall in love and have sex... She cleared her thoughts. "This place is beautiful."
"Yes it is," Ray said with a smile. He produced a black cloth. "Now, do you trust me?"
"Why?" She looked at him, then the cloth.
"I need to blindfold you for the time being." He explained. "We can't have you see what happens in the game without even playing it first, right?"
She had no reason to trust or distrust Ray, he had said nothing but the truth as far as she knew. It had all been a lie, of course, and now she was knee deep in a situation she could not have dreamed on.
"Okay, I guess so," Mi-Jung stupidly took the blindfold and wrapped it around her eyes. "This isn't a Febreeze commercial right?" She asked jokingly.
Ray laughed, placing his hands on her shoulders and steering her.
"No, I'll just be taking you to where you'll be staying." He said gently.
As they made their way through the maze of corridors, Ray was greeted by others, presumably his team.
After about five minutes or so they stopped and were let in through a door.
"This is your room, you may remove the blindfold now."
Mi-Jung undid the knot and her eyes adjusted to the room.
It was lovely, large ornate windows allowed the beautiful sky to be seen.
"Holy shit, this is amazing." She said slowly.
"Now, to explain the game." Ray said, flashing another small smile. "You will be using the app downloaded on your phone, and it will be a messenger app for a fictitious charity group called the RFA, the members each have unique personalities, and you can win their affections. At first they will he suspicious of you, but then accept you into their ranks as party coordinator, and you host a party with them, and possibly find some form of romance. However, these AIs have bugs in their personalities." He added. "Some of them may act erratically, or not the way we programmed them to." Ray frowned, and his expression turned dark. "But I assure you, the team is working on it. Occasionally I will pop in. And they will be none the wiser of me."
"Sounds interesting." Mi-Jung had said. "So the basic premise of the game is to convince them I'm trustworthy and then hold a party with them?"
"Precisely." Ray had said. "So you can start right now, if you need me, just call." He walked towards the door. "I hope you enjoy the game." He left for a second before popping his head back in. "Oh! In order to earn their trust you must tell them Rika sent you."
"Thanks, I'll get started on the game right away." She gave him a thumbs up.
He smiled and left.
She opened up the game. There was a chatroom open. People named V, Jumin Han, Jaehee Kang, 707, Yoosung, and ZEN were there. She assumed these must be the AIs.
Jumin apparently had a book out, and the others were not happy.
Mi-Jung felt odd watching this go down. These red flags should have screamed at her. They were too human to be AIs.
Weren't they supposed to interact with her? Or she them? She had a textbox but she couldn't type in it. More red flags that she had ignored. She would later curse herself.
This RFA was having a very realistic panic over her presence and she was a fool to have continued on past that day. She should have questioned Ray, but for whatever idiotic reason, she accepted it as it was.
...
As the warning signs showed themselves, she was turning a blind eye to them.
The hatred Ray held for the RFA. The secretive location. The blindfolding. The "AIs" reactions and chats. All too realistic and humanly complex for a developer to make.
Mi-Jung wanted to kick her past self's ass for not recognizing these signs.
She looked out the window. Maybe she could escape that way? Jumping out? Somehow scaling the wall?
There was too much happening in the past couple of hours, she's probably kill herself or seriously injure herself if she tried getting out via the window.
What if she told 707? Jumin? Jaehee? Yoosung? They must have been real if V was.
She sat on her bed and fell into an uneasy sleep, her mind going in about a million different directions.
