When the door finally clicked shut, I sat up and blinked my eyes open. The young doctor stood by the door, a soft smile playing on his lips. Thick brown glasses framed his warm eyes, and his pale white coat hung over a normal doctor's uniform. There was something gentle about him that made my heart flutter.

"Thanks..." I whispered, looking down shyly.

"Don't mention it, Luna," he said with a bow, his voice steady but kind. "As Prince Logan's mate, you are now part of the royal family. I live to serve the royal family."

He began the full check-up, speaking softly and repeating words I didn't understand. I'd never been to a doctor before. Sam and the others had patched up wounds as best they could, but that was the extent of my care. I was covered in plaster, my leg trapped in a huge cast. A mess, really. The doctor assured me it was temporary-just until my wolf completed the healing process.

"I'm not so sure about this..." I whispered.

"Not sure about what?" He stopped, looking at me with quiet concern.

"About me and Logan," I said, avoiding his gaze.

"What about you two?"

"That we could ever be mates."

He paused, searching for the right words in his eyes. "I'm not sure what you mean, Luna. Do you feel sparks when you touch?"

"Well... yes-"

"Does he make your inner wolf and soul go crazy?"

"Yes-"

"Does it hurt when he leaves you, even for a second?"

"Yes."

"Then I'm happy to tell you... you are mates. All those signs point to it."

"I know we are mates, but how? You should know I'm just a... a slave."

"Oh, I know. Everyone knows." He laughed softly. "The king spread the word soon after he met you. The queen has begun planning a royal ball in a few weeks to celebrate."

"But... I thought the queen was cruel? I've heard stories-that she believes those without noble blood have tainted blood, that they should never mate with those of higher class."

He was quiet, not answering.

"Oh, my goddess, it's true!" I gasped.

"Well... kind of true. The queen has her views."

"But does she know about me?"

"She knows her stepson found his mate... yes," the doctor said, scratching the back of his head.

"But-"

Before I could finish, the door slammed open.

"Yes, I will tell you the moment she wakes up!" I heard Logan's voice, low and tense.

I looked up to see Logan, freshly cleaned and dressed, though his hair still dripped wet over his shoulder. His eyes were a dark, stormy black.

"Your Highness!" the doctor gasped, bowing quickly.

"Don't you 'Your Highness' me!" Logan hissed.

"Logan... don't, please!" I begged softly.

"No, Ally. He disobeyed me!" Logan's voice sharpened, his eyes flashing black.

My mind raced-what happened to Nathan? What had Logan done to him? Would he do the same to the doctor? I couldn't let that happen. I liked the doctor; he was kind and only did what I asked.

"Logan, stop!" I said, gathering my courage. "Stop right now, or I'll leave you!"

I shouldn't have said it. His eyes deepened to an even darker black. He stepped away from the doctor and drew a long, shuddering breath. Then he moved toward me-no, toward the edge of the bed-and stopped. I knew it wasn't really Logan, but his wolf taking over, furious and possessive. He gently cupped my face and drew me close.
