The ocean-blue eyed beast looked down at me, his eyes filled with amusement as a smirk painted his face. He kept watching my every move.
"Lyric, you can't much do what you want, can you?" His voice was beautiful. It's what I needed to hear at the moment.
"No," I whined, shaking my head. He smiled, moving away from me as he began walking to my desk.
"I shall help you, if you so want it," I nodded at his offering, watching as he walked towards me. His hand cupped my face, his thumb running along my chin before his hand left my face, his ocean eyes blinking as he turned around.
"Let us go then," he said, walking out of the door and I began to follow.
My eyes snapped over, my breathing heavy. My body jerked up in bed instinctively, making it so I was sitting on the bed. Zero continued to sleep soundly in the bed next to my own.
I slid off the end of the bed once my breathing calmed. My feet made an almost silent noise against the carpeted floors of the inn.
I made my way out of the door and down the hallway, taking small steps on the stairwell to try to keep the old, wooden stairs from creaking and groaning.
Everyone in the inn had fallen asleep long before Zero and I had. We had gotten here at almost midnight.
"They need fucking candles in this place," I mumbled to myself, having a hard time seeing in the dark room I had entered after leaving the stairwell. I stood still a moment, trying to let my eyes adjust.
"What are you doing?" I jumped at the voice, turning around to find ocean-blue eyes staring into mine. "It's almost sunrise."
My shoulders instinctively shrugged. "I couldn't sleep," I spoke, telling the truth. Zero looked at me, raising an eyebrow before walking past me.
I watched him, curiosity freezing me in my spot as I saw him to go the small window by the door. His head moved as his eyes searched the outside.
I made quiet steps towards him, stopping when the boy jumped away from the window, hiding against the wall. I arched a brow at him, making him only bring an erect finger to his lips, telling me to be quiet.
After a couple of moments of silence, a knock echoed from the door and throughout the inn. The doorknob was turned, probably in expectance for it to be unlocked, but it wasn't.
Zero's blue eyes disappeared as he closed them, making me wonder what was so bad about who was behind the door. It couldn't be a murderer.
I looked at the door before my eyes traveled to the window. Slowly, quietly, I made my steps to the window, having to stand on the tip of my toes to see outside.
A man dressed in a red robe stood outside. A sword was on his waist and fancy looking boots covered his feet. He looked fit for a king, and it made my curiosity of Zero's fear grow.
The man once again knocked on the door, shaking his head when no answer was given. He put his hand up to his head, pulling back the robe's hood to reveal a head full of grey hair.
I dropped to the bottom of my feet, now face to face with a wall. I felt hands grip my waist, making my head look over my shoulder to find Zero, eyes closed and lips trembling.
"Lyric," his voice sounded very distant, "come on, wake up."
I was confused by the words, and brought my fingers up, snapping them in front of Zero's face. His eyes opened wide, looking towards the window before letting out a breath. I decided not to question him about his recent words.
"Who was that?" I immediately questioned, making Zero glance down at me before his gaze continued to rest on the window. He kept his hands on my waist, seeming not to notice that they were there.
"He was my grandfather," he answered, which only succeeded in making me even more curious. "He's a rich fool that gambles most of his money away."
Zero's hands finally left my waist as he walked towards the kitchen area. My feet followed, not questioning why, just followed.
"Why was he here?" I asked, tilting my head to see around Zero when he stopped.
"He was most likely put on the group that is looking for me," my eyebrows furrowed at his words.
"Looking for you?" I asked, realizing that I, myself was a thief, and I knew nothing about the boy who had accompanied me. The boy who had people looking for him.
"It's nothing, I just ran away from home," his back was turned to me. I glanced at him one last time before turning away, being as quiet as a mouse as I walked to the door.
"I am a thief," it was all I said as I walked out of the inn. I heard Zero's footsteps, but had already ran to the back, where the stables were placed.
Horses and mules lined the place, but I only looked for the one I had placed in here for the night.
"Mare," I whispered, untying her bridle from the rope quickly, before slinging myself into her saddle. She took off without even having to be told.
"Lyric!" Zero's voice yelled as I passed him, Mare galloping as fast as she could. His footsteps reverberating on the rocky ground as he ran behind us, it all soon stopping as I got further and further away.
"He almost got us caught," I whispered to the horse that only continued walking through the woods. I had said the sentence several times within the last couple of hours.
I knew Zero had his horse in the stables, which made me leave the path as soon as I had gotten out of town. This made Mare and I travel through briar bushes and trees as Mare had ran most of the first hour.
"We could've been in jail by midnight," I spoke, speaking a little louder since we had left the camping grounds. Mare remained silent as she walked. I shook my head, patting her neck as she began to get back on the worn path.
