Chapter Two

I wake up in the middle of the night to go get something to eat.

Midnight snacks always help me fall back to sleep.

The silence of my house scares me a bit.

You never know when something bad will happen.

I've always been scared of ghosts and monsters.

Not really the dark, though.

I slowly get out of bed.

Trying not to shift my weight to much to make the old wood that holds together my bed squeak.

Pulling my covers to the side, I notice something in the corner of my eye.

It's James.

He always checks up on me now and then.

"What are you doing up?" I ask politely, trying not to start a fight.

Anything I say to him starts a fight now a days.

"Getting something to eat." He replies.

I stand up from my bed and walk down our narrow hallway, with James behind me.

He's so close I can feel his warm breath on the back of my neck.

We get to the end of the hallway and walk into the kitchen.

He tells me to sit down and he can get us something.

I follow his orders and walk up to our island and sit down on a stool.

The light of the fridge gives me a headache, but my eyes adjust.

He gets us a tall glass of milk and grabs Oreos from the cabinet.

This used to be our favourite snack as little kids.

James places the glass and cookies in the middle of the island, and sits down across from me.

We haven't been face to face in a while.

I hope we can be as close as we used to be soon.

But he kind of just shut me out of his life.

I don't really know what he's been doing lately.

It's kind of awkward for a while.

We just sit there drinking our milk, but nobody has touch the Oreos yet.

I decide to grab one.

As I reach my hand out to take a cookie from the bag, James and I touch hands.

It sends a slight shiver up my back.

We stare into each others eyes for a second and then go back to eating.

The silence makes me uncomfortable.

It doesn't even feel like we know each other anymore.

After the awkward silence I finally encourage myself to start a conversation.

"So how's school going?" I ask nervously

He looks at me for a moment before answering "Good."

Not the response I was looking for.

I guess he doesn't want to talk.

Grabbing another cookie from the bag, I look to my right.

Out the living room window I notice the trampoline we used to jump on.

James and I haven't been on that thing in ages.

I look back to my glass of milk and dip the Oreo into it.

"You still play with your food, I see." James chuckled.

I laugh a bit as well.

He has a lot of sense of humour.

Which is one of the reasons why I love him.

After we finish our snack I take pick up our glasses and take them over to the counter.

I felt like throwing up after eating all those Oreos.

I place the empty glasses into the sink and rinse them off.

James has already gone to bed.

When I finish drying off the cups I put them back into the cupboard.

I let out a big yawn and started to head down the hall.

Instead of going into my room I go into my dads, to see if he was alright.

I opened the door a quietly as I could.

I peeked in through the crack to see if he was asleep.

But he wasn't there.
