Gosh! I'm so excited! I can't explain the feeling...
Finally, I am going to experience how is it to work in the hospital. I prepared myself for this day since last week. I've read different nursing books, review my notes and the procedures we did during our RLE return demos at the nursing lab... I just can't mess this opportunity and I have start with a good impression from my clinical instructor (C.I.) as well as from the hospital's nursing staff.
By the way, I'm Katelyn, Kate for short. I'm taking-up BS Nursing and we just had our capping ceremony last semester. Today I'm going to have my first ever duty in the hospital. I've been nervous, anxious and excited about it since last week, when we got our duty schedules for the semester. My first area, which is where I'm heading to now, is the medical ward of the city's only public hospital. My shift is 3pm-11pm. I was lucky enough to have my friends as my dutymate.
The hospital is situated in the city proper, which is quite far from where I live. It's a 45minutes to 1 hour ride from our home. Most of my dutymates are from or live near our place too and my father promised to pick me up when my shift ends so I don't really have a problem about my shift and how I would get home at a late hour of the night.
Fast forward...
Our first day is finally over. It was a fairly good experience. We got three toxic patients that we have to monitor the vital signs every thirty minutes. My friend's patient died and she was really upset about it. We even cried for the old man when we were at the conference room already since our C.I. told us to hold back our emotions as much as possible when were still in the ward because we are going to witness such scenes every now and then. She said that since this is a public hospital, we should expect for the worst...
I and three of my dutymates (Jacob, Rachelle and Clarice) were waiting for my father to pick us up, he said he's going to be a little late. We were sitting at a long bench at the hospital's parking area when Kenneth, one of our classmates passed by and offered us to stay at their house while waiting. He was also having his duty at the hospital in another ward. He happened to be living near the hospital and he was kind enough to invite us over. We accepted his offer, I called my father to inform him and he said it's much better if we stay there.
The street leading to Kenneth house was already clear. Not even a cat nor a dog is roaming around and there's no one staying outside unlike in some lively areas where you can see old men drinking near a store. There were no other source of light around except for the street lights aligned far from one another, that could only emit certain amount light enough to cast faint shadows. Houses were already closed, windows shut, lights were already off, and the only noise we could hear were the sound of our footsteps and our casual talking to one another.
Seriously... Kenneth can walk alone in this creepy street at this time of the night?
With that thought, I started to feel something... Like there's someone following us. Then I was starting to have goose bumps and I began to imagine things. What if there were bad guys following us? What if they kill the two guys with us then rape the three of us and kill us after too? Or what if a ghost from the hospital followed us here? Oh God! Please keep us safe T^T
I thought Kenneth's house is just few walks from the hospital but why does it feel like forever before we arrive there? Gahd! With this unsettled curiosity and eerie feeling, I don't think I can still go on, so to end this emotional and mental torture I'm going through, I decided to turn and see if there really is someone behind us....
