AUTHOR'S POV

The ocean is a wonderful place. So mysterious and beautiful. Filled with amazing creatures and species we have yet to discover. What lies beneath the deep ocean floor is what everyone craves to know.

Do mermaids exist? And are they still alive?

This question has been on everyone's mind ever since that crazy day, but we will get to that later on. Let's dive into the crystal water and fill our satisfaction with what awaits underwater.

Astrid's Pov

Hi, I'm Astrid. I'm 16 years old and an only child. Some may not believe in me, but I am what others call a myth, I'm a mermaid. Yes, a mermaid. I'm also Princess of this magical place. I'm not like those other mermaids/men, I'm not like other princesses. I have a dream. A dream where mermaids and humans can live in harmony. But my dad, the King, says otherwise. Little does he know, I have actually seen the human's world. It's probably one of the most amazing places I have ever really gotten a glimpse of.

Just then, a soft tune could be heard from the place I shouldn't go; the cove. Stormfly and I slowly swam towards the noise and a shiny glimmering shell-shaped music box was glistening against my baby blue tail.

"Woah, I haven't seen this in years. This was mums from dad on their anniversary." My eyes start to tear up as I remember my mum. Soon enough, my thoughts are forgotten when I hear my dad shout.

"ASTRID! GET YOUR TAIL HERE RIGHT NOW!"

"Oh no, Dad's back early. Stormfly quick. Let's go!" Right, I forgot to tell you about my pet dragonfish. She's a blue-yellow dragon-shaped fish. She has been with me since she hatched from her egg.

A couple seconds later, I reach my dad.

"Yes, daddy?" I try to sound innocent. With anyone else it works, with my dad ehhh not so much.

"You are 3.5 seconds late, young lady. Where have you been?" My dad looked furious. Then again,  when is he not?

"I was out with Stormfly," I say.

"You're lying."

"No, I'm not. I was collecting shells with her."

"Where are they then?" My mind froze. I made an excuse without thinking. Time for plan B.

"I- err- I -dropped them when I made an important discovery."

"Oh really? What is this so-called 'Important discovery'?"

"I don't know if you would want to see? I mean it-"

"SHOW  ME!"

I slowly opened up my shoulder bag and brought out the shell music box I found. His eyes widened. Then he went back to frowning. He turned away from me.

"Where did you get that from?" He was starting to scare me. I had never heard him like this.

"T-the c-cove?"

"YOU WENT TO THE COVE!?! I TOLD YOU TO NEVER GO THERE!"

"What's wrong with the cove? You've never taken the time to tell me! Why you don't let me go anywh-"

"SHUT IT! I HAVE NO MORE PATIENCE FOR YOU! Heather?"

"Yes, your majesty?"

"Escort her to her room and make sure she doesn't leave."Heather nodded.

She took my arm gently and started to pull me to my room. I looked in my shoulder bag for the shell but it was gone. I looked up and saw my father crush it in his giant hand. All I could do was just stare at my father in disbelief.
