For as long as the Crystal Gems had known Connie, she had worn a fragment of a stone around her neck. They all assumed it was a natural forming rock that she had found one day and kept as a memento. The shard was too small for Garnet and Pearl to recognize it, and Amethyst hadn't emerged yet so she wouldn't be able to tell at all.
But every time Steven saw it he got this really guilty feeling like it was his fault that that shard was being used as a piece of jewelry. It made his gem hurt looking at it, but nothing bad ever happened so Steven, started to ignore the feeling, he never got used to it, but he did learn how to ignore it.
As time went on, and Steven and Connie got closer, he began to notice the gem shard more and more, he wanted to ask where she'd found it, but that would mean admitting that on some level, Steven was still aware of the gem.
When they first fused, Stevonnie was confused as to where the necklace had gone, they still had everything else they'd had as Steven and Connie, so the missing necklace confused them.
Since it happened every time Stevonnie began to get more and more curious.
Finally, Steven brought up an idea for solving the mystery: Connie would take the necklace off, then they would fuse and take the shard to Steven's Cloud room and ask it!
At first, Connie was hesitant because the room only ever showed illusions, but Steven countered that with the fact that it showed you whatever it is that you wanted to see, and they wanted to see what the gem shard was.
After working up the nerve the two waited until all the other gems were out of the house and put their plan into action.
Stevonnie entered the pink cloud room with the shard necklace grasped tightly in their hand. Clearing their throat, Stevonnie asked the room, "Who is this shard?"
Suddenly a figure began to walk through the clouds, she was dressed in pink so they nearly missed her. The figure's hair was a light pink and it looked like the clouds that surrounded them, with a gem in the middle of her stomach, just like Stevonnie. She was small for a gem of her kind, only slightly taller than the fusion.
But she walked right up and smiled at them.
"Hi! It's nice to meet you! I'm Pink Diamond, and I think you have one of my gem shards."
