"Mommy! Hi..." I put the box back on the shelf. That doesn't help because my mom looks at the display and sees the row of plan b boxes behind me.
"Hi Auntie..." Chelsea looks at my mom with wide eyes. My mom's eyes narrow. "What were you doing with that box of plan b, Claire?"
"I- I..." I stammer over my words and avoid eye contact. Chelsea comes to my rescue "We're getting it for a friend"
"I said Claire." My mom turns her glare off of me and onto Chelsea. Chelsea looks everywhere but my moms eyes. "Uh, I'll be right back I need to go...do something." Chelsea gets the fuck out, deserting me with my mother.
"This is for just in case-"
"Just in case what?" She questions. I stay silent and don't look her in the eye. "Claire, you need to be careful. You are a bright young lady with a successful career ahead of you. You don't have any room to make mistakes. Do you understand me?" My mom says sternly.
"Yes ma'am..." I stare at the floor, ashamed of myself. I stay that way, thinking about what she said until I hear the click of her heels on the tiled floor when she leaves. As soon as she's out of sight Chelsea miraculously appears.
"She didn't give it to you too bad, did she?"
"No." But with those few sentences she gave me a lot to think about. I do have an entire career ahead of me, having a child, especially out of wedlock would mess up any chance of me becoming partner. Nobody would take me seriously because I'd be another statistic. Maybe I should slow it down with Dean before anything else can happen.
Chelsea and I go to the register and buy the pill. We stay in silence until we get back to the car "I think I should call it quits with Dean."
"What?! No! You can't do that. I already shipped you guys."
"We can't be together. It's not right. Besides I got my career to focus on so one day I can be partner."
Chelsea shakes her head "No. Hell no. I'm not accepting this."
"Chelsea, this is my life and my decision. I'm ending it with Dean." I sigh, getting into the car. I get a text from Amir telling me he's at my apartment. "Can you drop me back off at my complex?"
"Yeah, no problem." Chelsea shrugs. It's quiet the entire car ride to my apartment complex. I turned on the radio to have some sound but it didn't help much. Chelsea pulls into the parking lot of my complex, I grab the brown drug store bag.
"I know your career comes before everything. But should it come before your happiness?"
"See you later,Chels." I get out of the car, trying not to dwell so much on what she said. I get up to my apartment, before I can unlock the door, it swings open. Amir is standing there in his pajamas, and of course eating my food. "You're making yourself comfortable." I walk in my house and see his clothes and belongings strewn all over my living room.
"What the fuck?" I slowly turn and look back at Amir.
"Hannah kicked me out."
"What? Why?"
"She thinks I cheated on her."
"Well did you?"
Amir shrugs "Maybe once... or three times." He admits. I roll my eyes and set my bag on the island counter.
"Do you know how long you'll be staying here?" I rip the bag open, tearing it where staples held it together. Amir changes the subject
"What's that?" Amir looks in the bag with his nosey self. He reaches in the bag and pulls out the plan b box. "Why do you even need this?" He raises his eyebrow.
