It was 1:00 am in Lilak county, New Mexico, and alarms were going off in Lilak labs. If you had asked the locals they would tell you that the lab was a government testing facility, and even granny Ena, who had lived in Lilak county for 105 years and only two miles from the lab, had never heard the alarms sound. The inside of the lab was absolute chaos; men and women in lab coats rushed to evacuate the building, while security guards and military personnel rushed deeper into the lab. In the lowest floor of the lab, shouts of "Contain it!" "Don't let it get up the elevator!" and other similar things broke through screams of animalistic pain, gunshots, and the blaring alarms. As the hour progressed, the shouts, gunshots, and screams were heard less and less until the last scream was cut off by a gunshot.

As the clock tower in Lilak county struck two the only sound that could be heard in the lab was the blaring alarm. The lab was the scene of a massacre. The bodies of scientists and security personnel alike littered the floor, but the lowest floor, where the problem had originated, was the worst. The air was permeated with a sickening mixture of the scent of blood, cleaning supplies, burnt hair, and burnt flesh. The walls were splattered with blood and small streams of it spilled into the floor drains. One of the doors was open, and in that room stood a man, probably the only person left alive in the whole facility. His hair was brown and matted, and his clothes stained with blood. One of his cheeks had been grazed by a bullet, and he was looking in a mirror as he pulled on a lab coat. "Perfect." he whispered, smirking. He turned away from the door and bent down grabbing a gun from the body of one of the security guards. He walked towards the door and stepped over the head scientist, kicking his head, causing the head scientist's face to be visible. Had anyone been in the room, they would have been shocked to see that the dead scientist and the strange man looked identical.

Before walking out the door, the man turned staring at the head scientist and whispered one word: ".noitcelfeR" then he turned and walked out the door, slamming it behind him.

The town over from Lilak, Cottonwood, was a strange town to say the least. Things that would be normal in the rest of the country were often considered weird in Cottonwood. Two of the students in Cottonwood high were reading the newspaper a month after the disaster in Lilak Labs. The first student, named Dyl, an extremely vain conspiracy theorist who would rather be in the library trying to prove one of his theories than in school, was talking with his friend, Sam, an agendered 14 year old who was very shy, reserved, and probably the best student in Cottonwood High.

"Hey Sam! Look at this! Look at this!" Dyl yelled waving the newspaper around in the air.

Sam rolled his eyes before stating dryly, "I can't see it if you don't hold it still."

Dyl looked embarrassed before showing Sam the head line, Massacre in Lilak Labs. it was followed by a picture of a body filled hall. Sam turned green, sickened by the image as Dyl ranted about how he knew there was something wrong with the lab.

"Please, stop. How does this not bother you?" Sam begged.

Dyl blinked owlishly at Sam before recognizing how much the image bothered sam. Dyl looked sadly at his toes before whispering a soft "sorry."

Sam just sighed before nervously asking "Will you be at school tomorrow? We have a test." Dyl laughed before giving an affirmative before leaving to the sound of his friend calling "See you tomorrow!"

Dyl called back as he rode his bike off "See you then!"

"And stop staring at yourself in the mirror so much! It's dangerous!" Sam called as Dyl rode off laughing. Sam looked down at the newspaper Dyl had left on the ground, their face twisting up in disgust before spitting "I hate violence. I would never even touch a gun."

The next day when Dyl arrived at school, Sam wasn't waiting for him by the largest Magnolia that they always met at. Maybe he went to ask a teacher a question, Dyl thought before heading into the school. As the day progressed, Dyl grew more and more worried. Sam had never missed a day of school, let alone a test day. As soon as the final bell rang, Dyl rode his bike as quickly as he could to Sam's house. Sam's house was a small, but beautiful cottage in the woods.

When Dyl entered he heard the sound of a violent video game. This was odd seeing as Sam's family hated violence of any sort. When Dyl found Sam he did a double take, sitting on the living area couch playing some sort of shooting game on the Xbox. Sam had abandoned their normal soft pastel colours for Dark Reflections, probably the most vulgar death metal band in the country, T-shirt, black skinny jeans, and a black leather jacket.

"What are you wearing?" Dyl asked, shock evident in his voice. "And what are you doing. We had a biology test today!"

Sam snorted in annoyance. "Who cares? I was busy."

Dyl glanced nervously between his friend and the game before, just as nervously, mumbling something about needing to help his mom with something before running out of the house and grabbing his bike. As Dyl rode his bike away he didn't notice the tears rolled softly down his face.

The next day Sam was arrested. Sam had robbed a store then fought against the police officer who had tried to get them to stop. Sam spent the next seven days in juvy.

The day after sam was arrested Dyl was staring in the mirror, then he started yelling about missing his friend and asking why they had changed leaving Dyl alone. A scream ripped from Dyl's throat as he lunged forward, punching his mirror, shattering it and sending shards flying. "Sam. Why?" Dyl sobbed sinking to the floor blood dripping from his fist and cheek were a shard had hit him. He laid on the floor sobbing. When Dyl's parents got home they found him unconscious on the floor a small puddle of dried blood on the floor beside him. He spent the rest of the week in the hospital due to blood loss.

When Dyl Returned to Sam's house what he found seemed like something that could only be found in a movie. Behind the cottage he found two Sams. One of them, the original Sam, pastel colors, and a fearful look; the second was the Sam Dyl had seen playing on the Xbox earlier in the week.

The first Sam, the one he was sure was his friend, was holding their father's pistol out in front of them. The first Sam, the real Sam in Dyl's opinion, was shaking so hard he could barely hold the gun, tears were leaking quietly but rapidly from the original Sam's eyes.

"I hate you!" the original sam cried, his voice half way between a sob of anguish and a scream of hatred. "First you come out of my mirror and lock me in the shed!" The original Sam's eyes were filled with a flaming hatred that Dyl had never seen in anyone before, not even in his father's eyes when he was arrested two years back.

The Mirror Sam had the common sense to look at least slightly frightened as the original Sam continued screaming. "But that wasn't enough was it? You had to destroy my reputation and commit crimes under MY name, too!"

The Mirror Sam put his arms up in a placating manner before saying as calmly as possible. "Put the gun down. If you hurt one of us you hurt us both."

The Original Sam hissed loudly as Dyl sobbed for him to put the gun away. The Mirror Sam put his head down in defeat before murmuring softly. "If you are really going to kill us then I have to tell you," The mirror sam looked at the Original, tears sliding slowly down his face. "I never meant for this to happen."

A single shot rang out as everything Dyl cared about shattered.
