Chapter 1

My life was normal.... Until the witchcraft hysteria hit Salem, Massachusetts, in 1692. I was 13 years old at the time. I lived in a cottage, small.. Yes, but very nice. One of the nicest in town. I was lucky. My father had a very respectable job; our family was not looked down upon. When I say family, I mean my father and I. I never met my mother. I don't know why she isn't with us... But I don't plan on finding out anytime soon.

I may sound heartless, not wanting to know what happened to her. I just don't want to hurt him, my father still aches of heart break. He can't let her go. Everything about me resembles her, my eyes, hair, smile, complexion... Everything. It's nice to know I'm somewhat like my mother I guess... But reminding him of her must kill him.

My father is a good man. He has never raised his voice, never raised a hand to hit, never touched tobacco or a bottle of alcohol, and has never spewed a curse word. Sadly, I don't see him much. His work keeps him occupied. However, on the weekends it's just us. One day of each weekend he brings me to our favorite restaurant and buys me a delicious peach cobbler topped with vanilla ice cream. On the last day we fish in our small pond. That's how my life was, great. Now the greatness has been sucked out of this town.
