“Hello miss what can I get for you?” the butcher asks “I’ll take 4 pounds of center cut roast pork and 4 six ounce filet mignon please,” Rory says in response. Waiting for her order to be fulfilled she goes over the list her grandmother had given her checking off the things she has already picked up. “Carrots, cooking cream, whipped cream… oh that’s right I should get some hot chocolate mix,” she says to herself. As she looks up to note the butcher’s progress she is forced backward by the impact of someone bumping into her. She feels a hand on her shoulder as the offender apologizes “Sorry Love didn’t see you there.” Rory’s ears automatically perk up at the sound of a voice she is certain belongs to an old friend. She turns around to see a man around 6 feet tall, dark unkempt hair and a really expensive wool coat it has to be him  she thinks to herself and without a second thought she yells  “Finn?!”

The tall man turns around slowly and as her face comes into sight a smile that can be seen from space spreads across his face “Rory? is that you Love?!” Finn exclaims with glee. Before he knows it she has made her way across the deli area and throws herself into his arms. The two old friends embrace for a while before they are shaken out of their reverie “number 64, number 64 filet mignon and roast pork” the butcher hollers. “Oh that’s me, it’s me” Rory hollers as she raises her hand.

Finn laughs “well you might want to go get your food then,” he says sounding amused.  Rory thinks for a minute  “oh right, duh” she mutters with a furrowed brow feeling quite self-conscious at the moment. She walks over to the counter and picks up the order wishing the butcher a Happy New Year as she returns to Finn’s side.

“So Love, of all the gin joints, as they say, what are you doing in Nantucket of all places?” he asks curiosity written all over his face. Rory places the meat in her grocery cart and they begin to walk side by side through the store. “Well I’m actually visiting my grandmother for New Years, we weren’t able to make it out over Christmas so I’m spending the next week and a half here with her and my mom will join us tomorrow,” she replies promptly. “Wow Emily Gilmore on Nantucket Island, how did that happen and why hasn’t the whole island evacuated since her arrival?” Finn says jokingly.

“Well she has mellowed in the past year, and living out here has done her a world of good. She has real friends that she sees all the time, she’s a docent at the Whaling Museum, she loves the fresh albeit sometimes nippy ocean air, she’s a changed woman. Now if you don’t mind me asking what exactly are you doing in Nantucket, especially at this time of year you’re usually in Australia or tucked away at some resort with a redhead aren’t you?” Rory inquires.

Finn smirks and lets out a light laugh “you are right my dear I am normally with the family or some wonderful company of the fairer sex but I just didn’t feel like it this year, maybe I’m getting old or boring but I just wanted a quiet Holiday. I’m out here researching some properties for work and when I called up a friend to tell him he offered for me to stay at one of his properties here and then to a Party on New Year’s Eve, so it seemed like a good alternative” Rory slaps Finn’s arm playfully as he tosses a bag of pasta into his cart. “Haha, you boring never, old maybe but never boring” she quips as Finn gives her a dirty look for saying he’s old.  “Please Finn even when you’re 80 you’ll still be acting like a 20 year old” Rory jokes as they head towards the cash register to pay.

As Finn Loads his wares onto the counter he gives Rory a discerning look “So we’re not going to mention his name at all?” he prompts and Rory rolls her eyes “What’s there to talk about Finn I saw the wedding pictures in the paper it looked lovely, she’s pretty, the dress was beautiful and the write up says the food was amazing… what more is there to say?” she retorts with an ounce of hurt in her voice. Finn looks down at her and pats her shoulder gently “I’m sorry I mentioned it, Love, it’s been strange lately with him in Europe all the time and even when he is stateside she tags along so it’s hardly boys time if you catch my drift. Plus Colin is thinking of settling down with Samantha I mean they’ve only been together for a year now” he trails off.
