Chapter One: He looks like a Runaway Model

Why does it seem like whenever your in a rush everything seems to be going in slow motion? See things like this always happens to me, like I'll be running late to school and it seems like every stoplight we'd get to would turn red or maybe we would get caught behind some old Betty White that drives like 5 miles an hour. This is exactly what's happening right now, me and my brother are caught behind a very old looking version of Betty White herself. I wouldn't be surprised if it was her mother.

"Hurry up, we're going to be late!" I moaned as I waited impatiently in the car.

"We have plenty of time Valerie." My brother said as began playing with the radio dials.

Ugh! It was the first day of my junior year at a school that's already in session.

"I only have ten minutes until I have to be there, I don't want to be late." I was hoping my brother would beep his horn at the old lady in front of us or swerve around her. But of course he didn't.

"Will you just relax Valerie we're almost there. Why are you worrying so much? Mom and Dad aren't sending you here for no reason."

I cringed at him calling Jessica my mom, I just hated her. I hated everything to do about her! Why did my step brother Justin have to call her mom? He was so overprotective and he agreed with my dad and step mom that I should be sent to this school. Maybe it was just an excuse to get rid of me? You see I used to go to an all girls school but ever since my mom died three years ago I've been moving from state to state from school to school with my dad and new stepmom.
"Don't ever call it mom again, got it?" I half mumbled at Justin, almost to scared to talk back to him. But he knew I hated her. So did everyone in my imperfect family.

"I know you don't like when I call her mom, but she loves you Valerie. Just give her a chance." There was moment of silence between us. "Can you please try to hurry?" I begged.

"Alright." Justin said as he turned into the school parking lot. "Now you better hurry up or your going to be late." He emphasized the last word with a small chuckle.

"Thanks for the ride Justin, next time try going a little faster than some old grannie." I slammed the car door behind me when I thought I heard him mumble something under his breath.

I found my way to the entrance. It's not officially the first time I've been here. I've been here about a week ago to talk to the principal and have a look around. When I found the sign that was across the door that said 'Welcome to Rockcliff High School,' I knew I was on the right track so far.

I never really got nervous but when I reached to the door handle like gazillion questions came flying at my head. What if no one likes me? What if I get lost? What if I didn't get to class on time? What was it like having class with boys? What if.....

I should have payed attention to where I was going because I found myself running into something. My head smacked the floor and I heard my book bag fall and random stuff coming out. Oops, I must of forgot to zip it. Did I mention I have horrible memory? Anyway, when I finally looked up to see what I ran into, I felt a strong hand grabbing my arm and pulling me up. It was a boy about my age. He was tall, tan and had blonde short hair. His eyes were deep blue color. Now I felt really embarrassed that I ran into him. He looked like a runaway model.

"So-sor-sorry." I stuttered. What was a matter with me ? I never stuttered! I kept my head down, glancing at him occasionally.

"It's okay." He said as he helped me pick up my books. I couldn't help but notice how smooth his skin looked. I wanted to reach out and touch his arm, but I knew that would be rude and really weird. It's just different because I'm not used to seeing boys around.
"Hey?Are you new here because I've believe we haven't met, yet? I'm Jake, Jake Landel." He reached out and shook my hand.
