     Peck, peck, peck.
A black screech owl sat perched on the windowsill of Hermione Granger's bedroom. An envelope was tied to its foot. As the owl peered through the window, it noticed a figure lying in a bed. It cocked its head curiously.
A brown headed girl lay on the queen sized bed. Her hair was a tangled mess; frizzy and bushy, even asleep. Her blanket and sheets lay on the wooden floor, as if she had discarded of them in the middle of the night. Asleep, her facial features were soft; not as concentrated, like when she was awake. Her lips were turned slightly upward, almost as if she were smiling. She looked peaceful.
Peck, peck, peck.
The owl tapped harder this time, more impatiently.
Peck, peck, peck, peck, peck, peck-
Hermione Granger sat up in bed, groaning. She rubbed her eyes sleepily with the back of her hand.
Peck, peck-
"Mum! I'm asleep..." she half whined, half yawned.
     The knocking continued.
"I said I'm asleep!" she grumbled.
Mrs. Granger's voice was heard from the room just down the hall. "Hermione, dear? Is everything all right? Why are you talking to yourself?"
"Talking to myself? I'm talking to you!"
     "What?"
     "I said I was-"
Tap, tap, tap-
Hermione cut herself off abruptly. She turned her head toward her window, where the source of the noise was coming from. A black owl was there, looking rather irritated.
     She laughed. "Sorry, Mum!"
Hermione eased herself out of bed. She shivered slightly as her feet connected with the smooth, wooden floor. She attempted to smooth down her hair, which, of course, popped right back to its original position. She walked, barefooted, to her window and opened it.
The bird flew in and perched itself on her footboard, hooting with a bit of indignance. She yawned again, reaching for the letter, when the owl bit her finger.
"Ouch!" she exclaimed. She gave the owl a look, staring into its beady eyes. It stared right back at her. She huffed. "I'm sorry, all right? I was asleep." It gave her reproachful look.
Hermione frowned. This was a different type of owl. It carried itself with an air of importance. As she eyed the bird, she noticed the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry seal on the envelope.
     "Hey...you're from Hogwarts!"
The owl gave her a look, as if to say, Yes, I know. I thought we already established this.
"Well, if I can just take this..." she said, reaching for the envelope more cautiously. The bird snapped at her finger again, but she quickly withdrew it.
"Fine," she muttered as she ambled over to her wooden desk. A jar of owl treats sat there. She saved them only for Ron's owl, Pigwideon (or Pig as he liked to call him), and Harry's new owl, Jazz (A/N Hey guys! Sorry about the name, I couldn't come up with a name as unique as Hedwig's. Pretty crappy name, so sorry! Anyway, please continue). She reached inside and grabbed two. She wasn't going to be generous. The bloody owl just seemed to think that her fingers were food. She carefully made her way to the owl, eyeing it warily.
The bird watched her every move. It tensed as she hesitantly held her hand out in front of its face. Two seconds passed. Hermione was just beginning to think that she should put the treats back when the owl lunged, eating both in one swallow. It hooted again, though more gratefully this time. It obediently stuck out its foot.
Hermione tried to restrain herself from just snatching the letter. It was difficult; Hogwarts was, after all, her second home. But she had just gotten 4 inches from the bird without it biting her, she wasn't going to ruin that.
She fumbled with the letter for a bit, making the whole bird tremble. At last, she was able to to untie it. The bird gave one last hoot before spreading its wings and soaring out the window. Her eyes followed it out the window until the owl was just a miniscule dot in the morning sky.
One she was sure that no other thing would try to bite her for opening a letter, she hastily tore open the envelope. Hermione eagerly looked inside to see two pieces of parchment paper. She grabbed the first one. She began to read, her eyes quickly skimming over the paper:
