Second Creatures of Halloween Story
By Faith Zowie Escoe
I sighed as we sailed on. We've been sailing for weeks it feels like but Eric (the prince) assured me that it'd only been a week in this space time continuum thing. I really just want to get there. The longer we are here the more I worry about getting there. Daring ( keeps trying to reassure me but I really want to go back and take my chances at home right now. But it's to late for that, we're a week into our two week trip to Dreamscape. Everyone says I'll love it there but I can't help but fearing getting there. It's another dimension for God's sake. One I have no information on and I am only going for two reasons; I can't exactly stay on Earth with my new form and Eric is supposably my 'mate.' Whatever that means, Daring's explained it numerous times but I can't help but believe he's got the wrong girl. Maybe there's some other girl that turned into a Dreamer at the same time as me and Eric grabbed the wrong one? I mention that to Daring at one point. He fell out of his chair he was laughing so hard. Damn werewolf. After that I stopped coming out of my room unless I was hungry. It was a logical solution because Eric has only spoken with me twice on our trip back. He must have the wrong girl because he never wants to be around me. I continue to look out the window as more sad thoughts come to mind. I squeeze my eyes shut and shake my head in hopes I will shake the bad thoughts away. I suddenly can't just do nothing in the silence, so I grab my hairbrush and started to hum to myself as I continue to watch the dark twists of the space time continuum. It was night time, that I knew for certain. If anything changed during the day I was never awake to notice. I close my eyes as tears threaten to roll down my cheeks. I lick my lips before I opened my mouth to sing,
"Dancing bears, painted wings—
Things I almost remember—
And a song someone sings—
Once upon a December—"
My voice was quiet and rough, like it hadn't been used recently but I always sang when I was alone. I was terrified of anyone hearing me though so I always keep my voice low. I know Jake is no where near me and was no longer a threat but I was still scared of him. I don't know why. Suddenly there was a knock on the door, I stood and set my hairbrush where I has been sitting. I head for the door with my long hair hanging loosely and in my face as I look past the strands to my visitor.
"Princess," Daring sighed as he looked at me. I probably look like an a hollowed out version of myself. There were dark circles under my eyes though I sleep more than I need to. My eyes that glow in the dark had become dim and I always left my hair to hang around me as a curtain between me and other people. I was still in my nightgown though the night was half way through.
"Oh, it's you, Daring," I move out of the way so Daring could come in. I return to the window seat where I spend most of my time if I'm not sleeping. Daring closes the door behind him and sighs again as he looks at me. I was looking out the window again as I absently brush my hair.
"Princess, the Prince has noticed your disappearance form the deck," Daring says matter-of-factly.
My hand stalls for a second before it continues, "Oh?"
Daring growls, "Don't act as if you don't care."
I look at Daring, I feel so hollow as he stands there, "Daring, I'm tired."
Daring snarls at my words, "What happened to the loud and courageous girl that you were?"
"She changed species," I respond dryly.
"That's a lie and you know it."
"Daring, I really just want to sleep," I could feel the exhaustion weighing on me.
