It all started with a smile.
God! That freaking smile.
I was new at Lindale High School. I had just transfered from a private school two states over and I had hoped to get away from the dark past that ate at me each day.
Everything was going perfectly fine, I'd met this girl with bright orange hair and a big, toothy smile. Her name was Connie and we got along pretty well.
At lunch, she had introduced me to her small group of friends; Reagan, Hannah and Meredith. They all seemed too scared to speak up and be open about their opinion on things, such as politics or their social lives, or lack thereof.
While talking about Hannah's new puppy, Lance, a tall, kinda muscular girl walked up to our table. She wore a pair of washed out skinny jeans and a floral, loose top. Her jet black was curled, partly pulled up. All of the girls became silent and avoided eye contact with the green eyed girl.
"Connie! Just the girl I wanted to see!" She slammed her palms on to the table top.
"Eve, hi!," Connie's voice cracked as she avoided eye contact. "How are you?"
"Ah, I'll be fantastic once I get my work. Where is it?" She nearly growled, glaring at Connie.
"I-I don't have it, Eve."
"Of course you do! I made sure you had it last night, so where is it?" Her voice grew.
"I don't have it. I'm sorry." Connie whimpered.
"I swear to God. I'm going to beat your-"
"You aren't going to do a damn thing, Eve." I stood, blocking her view of Connie. The entire cafeteria became aware of the confrontation and watched with eager eyes.
"Who do you think you are? You're obviously new here, so let me get a few things straight. You do not talk back to me, Evelyn White, and you definitely do not come in between my objectives. K?" She laid a hand on my shoulder, trying to move me but I became a brick wall.
"No, honey, who do you think you are? I mean, obviously I'm the new kid but that doesn't mean I'm gonna bow down to you because you say so. What I'm not gonna let you do is bully my friends here. Okay? You must be so insecure to have to do this, don't you? Well, guess what? Fuck off! As long as I'm here you won't be anywhere near these girls to even have a breath of air to speak out of way to them, alrighty? Now leave." I waved as Eve growled, stomping away.
A tall guy with jet black hair had stood behind Eve the entire time. He wore dark jeans and a black t-shirt, his hair was disheveled and his jade green eyes lit with amusement. He was hot.
"You smashed her entire ego, now I have to go put the pieces back together." He smiled. "The names Elijah White, her twin."
Shit.
