Prologue
The door clicked open and he stepped out. A gleaming smile was papered on his face as he gratefully accepted the waiting man's hand with a firm shake. A brief moment of tension; then they stepped inside. Mercifully they were greeted with a blast of cool air and a wafting aroma of freshly baked bread. The two men sat down calmly, like they about to discuss what to watch on TV that night. Not wiping out a country.
They both gave off a sense of power with trimmed dark suits and a confident walk. Almost a swagger.
Through the window, I was watching them from I couldn't hear a word but could tell plies from their actions. Their walks, their suits and their eyes. Nervously twitching with hope and fear. A dangerous mix. Minutes past with my attention only wavering slightly at a spider weaving a web in the corner of the window. Soon after they emerge from the building, their faces layered with fresh smiles and they once again took up the charade of being friends, shaking hands enthusiastically before waving goodbye and sinking into the opal cars they arrived in. That day changed everything.
