I abruptly woke up to the sound of metal grinding on metal. It was dark, however every minute or so a gleam of white light would shine though the grates at the sides, allowing me to see the small, enclosed area I was in. It was filled to the brim with boxes and crates that each had the same logo printed onto the sides, 'W.I.C.K.E.D'.
With no idea what that meant I continued gazing around the room, it took me seconds to notice that I was the only one here, well unless you counted the pig that was grunting happily in the corner.
From the continuous rattling and dragging sounds I assumed the box was moving, was I in a lift? Trying to recall how I ended up in this situation, I sat in deep concentration, and yet nothing came to me. My mind was completely and utterly blank. At this revelation my breathing increased rapidly and my heart was beating so fast that I could hear it's uneven pounding. Trying to stay as calm as possible, I took a shaky breath.
I couldn't remember my name, where I was from, or even my family. I didn't even know if I had any. Painfully choking back a sob, I slowly moved back inbetween two wooden crates, pulling my legs up to my chest, in hope of seeking comfort. Even though I had no memories I was sure I that I have never felt more alone than I have now.
The lift jolted, still moving upwards but this time at a faster velocity, making it almost impossible to stand. So there I sat, attatched to the floor, beads of sweat building on my forehead. This continued for what felt like a half-hour until it came to a sudden holt and dauntingly locked into place.
Then I was unexpectedly blinded as the top of the lift opened. My eyes crying out in pain as they were exposed to the harsh light of the sun. Eyes still focusing, I heard a thud in front of me as if something or someone had dropped down.
Cautiously, I lowered my hands from my eyes to see the source of the sound. To my surprise it was a tall, blonde, lanky boy, who looked to be in his late teens. He moved around, shuffling boxes as if he was expecting to find something. Then he saw me.
Stopping in his place his jaw dropped dropped to the ground in apparent disbelief. "You guys won't bloody believe this" he called out in a heavy accent, probably to someone outside of the lift, "It's a girl."
At that I heard an eruption of voices: "Is she hot?","Probably just a dude in a wig", "Dibs!".
"Slim yourselves" A deeper voice bellowed, and the other voices reduced to a low murmur. "Are you sure Newt?" the person asked the boy in the box.
"Of course I'm bloody sure Alby, I think I know a girl when I see one," Blondie shot back defensively. Then he held out his hand to help me up off the floor, but I didn't take it. Upon seeing this he began to talk. "The name's Newt greenie. Now don't panic, we all remember our names sooner or later, good that?" Maybe it was his accent or the strange slang he was using but the only word I picked up on was-
"-We? W-who are you guys?" I questioned.
"Well why don't you come and see?" He said softly. Finally, I accepted his hand as he pulled me up to my feet. "Chuck it down Gally" he yelled and a heap of rope flopped down, and with the instruction of Newt, I hooked my foot in the loop and 'Gally' yanked me up to the surface.
I looked around, snapping my neck in every direction, blocking out the jeering of about twenty teenage boys. There were no girls. But that wasn't my main concern at the moment as I realised I was trapped. Four huge walls surrounded the area I found myself in, there was a forest, gardens and a few scattered buildings and something was telling me that this was all the boys had. However, at closer inspection the walls had a large gap between them, leading down a stone corridor where the walls were covered in vines.
Instincts taking over I ran away from the group and towards the walls, only for the shouting of the boys to get louder as they begin to chase after me.
At this, my desire to get away grew stronger as I sprinted towards the gap. I had almost reached it when my legs were roughly grabbed from behind, causing me to faceplant the grass. "I thought I told you not to panic," the culprit panted and I propped myself onto my elbows, seeing it was Newt who had knocked me over.
"Get off me," I growled as I yanked my legs from his grip. The boys had now caught up with us and were crowding round, silently watching the exchange.
"Listen here greenie. Slim it nice and calm and give us sometime to explain. I know you're bloody scared but you're not the first one to be in this position. We all have," Newt said pointing to the other boys.
At this I relaxed. "Where am I?" I huffed. Newt looked back at one of the boys for confirmation and then his eyes went back to me. "Welcome to the Glade greenie" he chorused like it was a rehearsed line.
"The glade? Greenie? How come I can't understand half the crap that comes out of your mouth?" I ask in exasperation. The boys then began to laugh and Newt cracked a grin, "Glader slang, but don't worry greenie, you'll catch on soon enough."
"But where-" I began only to be cut off by the 'glader' that kept sharing glances with Newt. "Alright shank that's enough questions for now, i'll answer them all in the tour tommorrow. For now i'm calling a garthering to talk about this klunk, this ain't normal" the guy said walking off to a big wooden building.
"Don't mind Nick. He's nice enough when you get to know him. We just haven't exactly had a girl before" Newt said rubbing the back of his head as he watched Nick walk off.
"But I don't get it why can't I remember my name?" I mumbled, trying not to sound whiny. "Like I said, you'll remember that soon greenie. But you might as well start settling in to your new home while you wait for it." He comforted, putting a supporting hand on my shoulder.
Home. The word felt alien-like. Did I ever have a home before this? Will it ever feel right calling this place home?
