Gale Xanders

Here I am, just a normal average teenage boy lying awake in bed texting. Yes, texting. I’m texting with my best friend Bailey Chance. We’ve known each other since childhood. And I’ve had a crush on her for as long as we’ve been friends. Every time I text her, I feel so excited and anxious at the same time. We have this pattern when we chat:

Me: “hey”

Her: “hi”

Me: “sup?”

Her: “oh not much, just being a potato”

Me: “oh same :)”

And then awkward silence follows. But, when I can’t think of what else to say, she always finds a way to start a conversation. We text each other almost every day. We don’t go to the same school. I go to a co-ed school while she goes to an all-girls school. We met through her little sister, who studies in my school. Why are they in separate schools? It’s a long story. But, I’m glad I met her sister and I’m glad her sister introduced me to her years ago. ~Bzzt~. I feel my phone vibrating on my soft comforter. I opened up the phone and saw her face in the screen. “1 new message from Bailey” it displayed. Every time I see her picture on the display, it makes me feel happy. Like, I have someone to hold on to when I feel down. “hey” she said, “sorry I replied so late, I was studying for incoming tests.” I replied with, “hey, it’s ok.” And I sent it. She’s always studying and has her priorities in check. But, I admire her ability to balance her studies and friends and other activities.

I really want to ask her out but, even if I did, I can’t. I once asked her on her opinion on relationships and what would she do if someone asked her out. I still remember that one summer day.

~magical time skipping blob!~

“So what would you do if someone asked you out?” I asked her as we sat in the field.

“well, I would say in a nice way that I can’t” she said as she plucked out the grass in front of her.

“why?” I asked again. “is it because of your mom’s rules?”

she looked at me and said, “that’s half the reason and because I think I’m too young and stupid for that kind of thing”

she’s not stupid. “but, if the time is right and I find the right one, maybe… maybe I will answer him” she said smiling at the distance. I just stared at her. Observing her. Why God why? Why would I fall for someone who can’t be in a relationship? But… I love the challenge.

“you’ll find someone” I said to her. She laughed. Laughed? Huh? “why?” I asked.

“what’s so funny?” she stopped laughing and smiled at me and then her smile slowly faded. “it’s just that… the someone I’m looking for might never be real…”

What is she talking about? Non-existent? What? “I don’t understand” I said.

“you see, that someone I’m looking for has to be crazy enough to wait for me to finish medical school… and that’s like… eight to ten years” she said looking straight into my eyes.

“I would wait for you” I blurted out loud. ‘shoot! She’ll know the truth o____o!!’

“wow… really?” she asked. “yeah.” I answered.

~back to present day, in Gale’s room~

I’m still waiting. I’m only a sophomore and she’s a junior. Sigh… I wish life was so easy. I wish she could have a boyfriend. I wish she’d pick me as a potential boyfriend. Wow.. that seemed weird. ~Bzzt~ my phone again.

Bailey: “hey bro, I gotta go”

Me: “sure. G’night”

Her: “(~^w^)~”

Sigh… I can’t wait to see her after school tomorrow.
