The Anniversary

“Hello? Is Mrs. Dawson there?”

“Speaking.”

“Mr. Dawson requests your appearance at the diner, ma’am.”

“Diner?”

“He said you would know which one, ma’am. He also said not to worry about Daniel, he already 

called a babysitter.”

“I do know which one.” The secretary heard a whisper of a smile in the woman’s voice. “Tell him 

I’ll be there at seven. Thank you.”

“Of course, ma’am.” The secretary hung up and glanced at Mr. Dawson, who was holding his 

briefcase and straightening his tie. “Mr. Dawson, your wife said she’ll be there by seven. Is today your 

anniversary?”

“Thank you, Brenda. And no, it isn’t.” he smiled to himself, and Brenda thought to herself, He 

absolutely glows with happiness. “But who needs an anniversary to go on a date with my love?” Then he 

skipped out. “Also, you can leave early! Tell the janitor to lock up!”

Brenda shook her head, hiding a smile. Her boss was almost always skipping everywhere. He 

seemed to throw happiness and energy everywhere he walked, acting more like a kid than an adult. 

Mrs. Dawson is very lucky, she thought wistfully to herself. 

Mr. Dawson ran to his car. It was still early, the sun barely setting, but he wanted to go and pick 

up a bouquet of flowers. After tossing his briefcase on the backseat, and starting up the car, he turned 

on the radio and sang along, his baritone joining the soprano effortlessly. He looked in the mirror before 

backing out, his red, handsome face smiling. He drove, obeying all the traffic laws and joyfully looked for 

a flower shop that had beauty worthy of his wife. 

Finally stopping, he rushed inside. “Hello!” he called in the store. 

“Hello!” an aging woman came out. “Oh, what a handsome young man. Are you looking for 

flowers for your girlfriend?”

“Wife, actually.” his eagerness always made shop keepers smile. “I need something as beautiful
